File Maintenance

(Pun Intended)

Looking for some information on square file choices and availability, I ran across several, similar threads. Thought that we could direct them here, which is the largest of these, so that everyone can share information with everyone else.

These are are the others I found - I will add pointers in each to direct people to this thread:

Searched recently for single or double-bevel files. This is what I found. Prices vary with quantity, and the site you buy from.
*Be sure to include shipping costs, which vary considerably*.

Bacho (3 sites - same seller, different prices!)

Are the same files used on a full chisel as semi chisel?
Welcome to the forum!

The same round files are used for full-chisel and semi-chisel chains, when they are sharpened conventionally.

This thread is focused on special files for ‘square filing’ cutters, which is a niche method, and can only be done on full-chisel chains.

Thank you
As I'm new to any chain beyond standard safety chain I was confused by videos and instructions as I would see some people using round files then some using a square or some beveled job and it threw me a loop.
So if I try a chisel chain I can use a round file. Or should I say try to sharpen with a round file.

Safety chain’ is a bad term to use. Reduced kickback chain is made with both full-chisel and semi-chisel cutters, although, the latter is more common.

You would use the same round files, and the same filing guides, for both styles. Choose the right diameter file based in the manufacturer’s specifications. Sharpening would be the same.

Thus part makes no cents. What kind of chain are you trying to sharpen?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

that is just me dogging my sharpening abilities

I'm not trying to sharpen any chain at the moment. But I might try a chisel chain out of curiosity and wanted to verify whether I needed a different file to do so.

Please post a photo of the chain you are referring to. There is FULL chisel and SEMI chisel. Both chains being equally gauged should use the same file.

You guys will be hatin on me like usual when I invade a square thread.
Gave up on expensive files myself and common methods of using them. Still toying with a very small triangle file. Going to mount it in a jig clamped to my bar for use right in the field on the mill.
Never liked all these short files myself. 12"or longer is much faster to sharpen with imo. It goes faster than round filed rocked or sand hit. Beats a regular round filed cutter once your used to it and so easy to convert coming off my round grinder. Still much harder for me to hold the angle perfect compared to round. Must be the educated hands. I hit the corner now most times. Cutting down on buying round files in favor of rectangles or square ones. Still need round files though as you all know.

Not any more than usual :) !

If they are files that you are using for square-filed chain, I think that it is appropriate. But I want more details and photos!

Is it a tapered triangular file? Brand? Length? Ever consider an extended handle for the 'short files'?

Thanks.

He doesn't do photos Phil. We have asked several times. Kenny. Ya gotta do what is best for you. I primarily do round only now too.
