Where can I get a 681 air filter and carb kitView attachment 379760

There's an eBay seller in Germany with a ton of 681 parts listed, including new air filters. I've bought a bunch of stuff from them and had good luck. Carb kit should be readily available in most places - either Walbro HD or Zama.

I ended up using 1/2 of each case to make up the best pair, the PTO half of the original was badly corroded, and the flywheel half of the donor was broken up where the switch attaches.

I was able to reuse the case gasket and cylinder gasket, I had the correct seals on hand, and progress is being made. I cleaned the points and have spark, used the drill to spin it over and confirmed that the automatic oiler is working, and left off making a gasket for the intake insulator. At that point I was interrupted with a customer needing saw work, and some museum visitors from way back in my working days.

It runs and cuts. I realize it is a short bar, but it went through my oak test log with real authority. Why is it you never notice the starter handle is crooked until you look at the photos?

Nice job Mark. That’s what mine used to look like. Very nice. When running mine the gyroscopic action of the flywheel creates resistance to moving it out of the vertical plane. Very noticeable.
Have you any spare parts leftover that could be used to beautify mine? Lol

I'm getting some time to work on the new to me Solo 667. The first irritant that needs attention is the massive leaking of bar oil, especially when sitting unused. The oil looks to be coming from the shaft drive area of the oil pump where the o-ring (item 73) as
shown in the IPL is located. Listed as "O-Ring 6,5x1" as p/n: 00 62 284.

Does 6,5x1 mean 6.5mm OD with a 1mm diameter? or 0.256" (1/4") x 0.0394" (3/64") diameter.
Is Viton the better option? Or is another material preferred? Where have you been getting these?
I Haven't taken the oil pump apart yet but plan to in the morning.

Thanks in advance

Got around to servicing the oil leak on the 667. There were several possible contributors and one that really screamed to fix me.
The obvious fix me issue was Item 73 an O-ring (see post above) was completely missing. There were several small shreds remaining around the plunger spring.
During reassembly, since all rubber pieces are well aged, sealant was added to the mating surfaces where oil would want to be contained.
Around where #81 fits to the case oil tank cavity, and where housing #71 fits over a small orifice that routes oil from oil pump housing to the oil passage in the case that goes to the bar.

I'll know soon (in the morning) weather the attention helped.

I acquired this Solo 70 via an online auction last week.

20230707_165349.jpg

It appears to be very low hours, but looks like it was put away dirty and forgotten under a workbench for 30 years or so... I wanted to give it a good cleaning and inspection before I tried to run it.

20230711_172346.jpg

The starter on these models (like the 642 as well) are very complex.

20230711_172356.jpg

Trying to remove some of the years of neglect.

20230711_172409.jpg

In the process of dismantling the oiler a couple of springs and check balls appeared...does anyone have access to a good IPL to help me get these parts back together again?

20230711_172417.jpg

Thanks,

Mark

Solo 70 is done. Some parts like the plastic air filter cover just won't clean up no matter what I throw at it. You can see the original blue around the logo. Whatever accumulated on this saw for the last 30 years or so just does not want to come off.

20230714_064705.jpg

Most of the metal parts did clean up pretty nicely.

20230714_064718.jpg

The broken air filter cover knob came apart, I will try to glue the pieces back together and just set it on there when the saw is on the shelf for display. I will probably keep it down until August and take it along to Baraboo (WI, Badger Steam and Gas event).

The Oregon Armor Tip bar did clean up nicely, the old chipper chain will cut but it is slow...

Thats a nice Solo 70, congrats, seems to be the second version with automatic oiler.
Its amazing how well preserved the handle bar's hose is. Usually these are broken to
peaces and often only few remains are left.
Those plastic covers tend to inhale every trace of oil and dust and never ever let go.
Great looking Oregon bar!

Interesting oiler on the 70.

Automatic oiler pressurizes the oil tank with a line off the cylinder above the intake port.

There is one manually operated plunger that operates off the thumb button, and another, smaller plunger connected to the throttle linkage so every time you open the throttle you pump a little oil. Thank you to Ray Benson for the fine IPL.

Nice looking 70. Here is mine, same bar even. Mine has the plastic trimmed around the cylinder. I have seen multiple that look like mine, I wonder if there was some sort of service bulletin back in the day for it, or people just thought it would help with cooling??

How did you clean the bar? I usually use green scotch brite and wd-40.

Mine is a good cutter, I enjoy running it. They have some whistle in the fan like other Solo's.

Hoping to find a Rex now!

I bought a "surface preparation tool" from Harbor Freight and use the 40 grit drum for polishing bars. It works very well and very quickly, since I have probably 100+ bars that could use some attention and more coming through all the time this will be a real timesaver for me. It does leave a nice brushed finish on the bar but takes off a lot less than a belt sander so it preserves the etching in the bar much better.

And the 70 definitely has a whistle...

New to the Solo club myself, picked up this beauty from @jacob j. I don’t own shelf queens so it will be ran. What all parts on these are common to Dolmar/Makita? Thinking mainly seals, bearings, and maybe piston ring(s). I’m not very familiar with what fits what, is there any of our European or Down under members that can get new OEM stuff? Thanks.

I bought a Solo 667 for $30, has anyone tried cleaning the Nikasil cylinder? It has a nice 20" cutting set that will fit my Partner toster. I don't know what kind of guide this is from you 😎 the saw is 26 years old and looks pretty good, I found the Golf piston 25$, I'll see what the cylinder looks like tomorrow / new chain Trilink
