Net pic but same bike,, needs a little TLC,, been sitting for 4 years, bike has been in one family all its life,, I rode the same bike to alaska in 1981 Price was good as i used to work with the guy and he said low ball me,, i did and then gave a little more.
I had a xr500 and xl500 great bikes the only difference was one didn't have lights but did have a lighting coil I did discover that the cylinders on mine were kinda soft the wiseco 11/1 pistons would wear the bore quickly
So I actually ran 2 stroke gas in mine
At 40/1 that actually made them last.
I put many thousands of miles on them.

If i remeber correctly the XR had a adjustable carb needle and XL did not,, we put XR needles in the XL and moved the needle up,,, bike ran much cooler... guess that would ad to life as well, economy dropped a little

I only rebuilt those 2 I preferred the TT/XT 500S they hill climbed better for me
I had 9 of those I regret not keeping them they are worth bank because they still run them in other countries and flat track guy's here still run those motors.
There's a German guy who manufacturers really powerful larger displacement race engines in his garage it's neat to watch.

1978 xt500e sitting at the home place. I'm original owner. Other parts of life took over and the bike was left with corn-gas in it. Pin holes in the bottom of that gorgeous aluminum tank.
Supertrap exhaust on it and I left the stock exhaust in the shed and damn mice nested in the muffler and destroyed it.
People want a fortune for a stock muffler (the "power chamber") version.
Bike had that off idle cough with stock carburation settings.
Milled .050 off the bottom of the slide and re-cut that little notch on the engine side of the slide.
Don't recall that needle and jetting changes though.
The oil line to the head was factory routed to the intake rocker shaft first. Exhaust valve was about at the outer range of clearance at very oil change.
I put the longer line on that reached the exhaust rocker shaft first and the problem stopped.
New valve guides at same time (exhaust was a little loose) and cleaned up the ports.
Took a gamble on cutting some spiral grooves in the intake port ( a bit like riffling).
After all that, the bike ran like a thumper ought to.

I kinda wish I had looked around and grabbed the kick gears out of an earlier model though.
always was a bit aggrivatin to have to sit there and sort of tickle the kick lever to get that first tooth engaged before you kicked it.
IF you didn't do that gear fiddling, the the engine was prone spiting back when you kicked it.

Also had a 78 SR500 for awhile too.

I keep hoping I'll be able to mess with the XT again some day..

I rebuilt one with a Aries 12.5/1 piston and a white brothers high performance cam
With the oil lines to the rockers kit.
It's still a screamer but would snap the kicker gear off.
It would pull the front wheel through 4th gear
Now these modern bikes have close to 100hp we had a measly 27-28 HP in the TT/XTs
