A while back I did a bunch of nerdy plier / "vise grip" research and ended up with Blue Points. The design with the flat section of the jaw really makes it easy to clamp in a vise.

I tried regular and did not like for the same reason. The claw sides are small and rounded. For me there was too small of an area to grip in a vise. The blue points have a larger all flat area to grip with the vise and butt right up to the vice jaws helping preventing any lateral movement.

I bought a set if sheet metal vise grips with the wide mouth like yours. No luck with them either. May be vise grip brand.
My Mike's chain vise is my go to tool for sharpening now.
