Corey I love big spikes and ordered a few sets of big Pro Safety double dawgs/roller catchers. I put a set bigger than MS660 spikes on a ported MS261......they looked great! The only problem was whenever I went to cut wood the chain appeared aggressive and would constantly bog and stop start. Changed the size of the dawgs and the bogging/stalling stopped. I just wonder weather a 40cc 421 has the power to use such large spikes and whether the 'aggressive chain' issues your having are related. They may well not be but just thought I'd share my experience with big dawgs on small saws.

I could see that but I don't think that is the whole cause because one I sharpened the chain and even out depth gauges they smooth right up. I honestly think it is more of to little saw for the wood is am cutting. Some of that oak and hickory just takes the wind out of their sales especially when it hits a knot lol

You may be right, but from my experience BIG spikes on small saws can massively change the way they cut for the worse. I too thought my chain were too aggressive until removing the spikes and things went back to normal. 5mins, 4 screws will confirm this, I think you will be surprised. I won't hassle you anymore, you have nice saws........& good coffee.

I will swap them out tomorrow if I have time. I have a .326 95vpx that seems a little grabby . Sounds like a good chain to test it with.

Regarding behavior of small bucking spikes vs. large bucking spikes - the additional force the operator can exert increases extremely due to the increased leverage when using large spikes.
I feel the difference whenever I switch forth and back between my Dolmar PS-6400 and Dolmar PS-7900, the PS-6400 wears small European style spikes while my PS-7900 sports large US type 1 spikes.
The leverage difference is extreme.

EU vs. US style spikes (You'll figure out which one is which ;) ):

For reference, the US style spikes are protruding 2" off the PH (the picture shows metric, 50mm/5cm):

The small spikes are great for noodling and limbing, the large spikes are far more superior for felling and flush cutting stumps.
Both styles work good for bucking with the large spikes "stealing" a little more bar length but protecting the PH better in thick barked wood due to the additional buffer zone.
Leverage while bucking grounded logs is not important to me, if I have to use the spikes my chain isn't sharp.

On a side note:
I have been told that I might finally get my firewood logs next week - after a 5 month wait.
Well, I will not be holding my breath but hope is high.
And NO, it is not this years/winters firewood, it is intended for next year - luckily.

Even just remove them 4 a few cuts to see if any difference. These new chain offerings are interesting, there is now AM full chisel picco and lots of new products out there. Thanks 4 taking time to review them!

Wow. WTF happened with the saw chain on the first cuts?
The chain keeps binding up with the angle cuts.

Idk. Just something I get every so often.
I know for a fact once I sharpened it it will run great and is my most used chain. The Vpx I tested grabbed a bit as well. I had one vxl that all the right side depth gauges where off and the cutters where a bit longer. One even filing and hitting just the left depth gauges and it was great.

I took the 421 out this morning after I touched up that 91 vxl chain. I don't think it is as fast as the ps but man it is a different chain. I toothy about videoing it to show it off but I had to much coffee to roast.

Ya the Stihl ps is a great performing chain. @bikemike I haven't had a chance to run Carlton. Is it better then the Oregon 91 VXL?

Not sure of all the oregon line of chain but all my oregon chains in the past for lopro has been horrible. the carlton that I get for my top handle holds a sharp for a long time, don't stretch much, and cuts fine hard or soft wood . and I will run the stihl lo pro stuff too no complaints with that stuff. it's a ford Chevy dodge thing
