The side loading comes from assembly of the cases... you are relieving the side load with the tool.

Another way to explain, when the case halves get assembled with bolts, the outer races get drawn closer together than the inner races are...by a tiny bit. No matter what, there is axial load with those screws... so once that load is applied, you can relieve it with the tool which pushing the inner race more onto the bearing, OR, pulls the crank further through the inner race, however you want to look at it.

I have a well worn brass hammer......it's number one use?

Bumping cranks.

Never have had an issue out of literally hundreds of saws.
Lead hammers are great for this. I have a copper one from harbor freight. I'll snag s pic. It's a few years old but I use it daily. 14980540245431399245365.jpg

What if ya took a cheap crank...turned the flywheel side lobe into a cutting surface by either adding sandpaper or putting a lot of burrs on the surface of the lobe with a grinder and a chisel? I dunno.

On the pto side there is .035 of space between the lobe and the boss when it's spaced centered. ...dunno about flywheel side
