I'm on the fence about driving the metal wedge in it...... tempted to run without for a bit and see how it goes.
I’m running both my new handles without.. I’ve beat the absolute crap outta them a few long sessions. Nothing has budged. I have a puck it’s ok if you have nearly an edge to start with. If you have a steady hand a belt sander makes life a whole lot easier. I don’t even put the fine belts on for axes You can go scary sharp. I don’t need all that. I don’t trust myself that well. I’m a cheapskate so I have a harbor frieght belt I paid peanuts for.

i really like that semi roughed in look. That’s the way mine looked that was made of maple. Cept not as pretty. I straight dig that one a lot

Yeah so do I , all it is is square bit of wood just champhored off 45 degrees each side with the big rasp and rubbed down with 80 grit sand paper finished no time at all I keep the copy lathe ash handles for the best axes as most people like the streamlined gun barrel look too match the lumbersexual image

It’s funny I never put a metal wedge in until a few months ago cos your always got that element of doubt now I just do it too cover myself cos there’s always somebody gonna complain

I used to put metal wedges in but have learned that you can actually weaken the handle since they tend to form splits in the shoulder. Thinning the wood wedge down a bit can help make sure it fills most of the handle kerf when it is driven to the point of refusal. Of course the kerf must be a tad bit deeper than the wedge length.

just got me a 3lb Plumb gents ! I don't know how good it'll work but it'll sure look pretty lol
I had this new 36" handle already for another head but thought I'd hang the plumb on it....the eye is too big for this handle so she won't get hung tonight, time to handle shop I guess.
