My big GB maul is my favorite one to split wood. I usually always have my GB mini or GB wildlife hatchet clipped to my belt while walking in the woods or hunting.

That's a really good 1st go well done! But you can make it better like a perfect mirror with zero imperfections. Start with a lower grit and get the worst stuff out but do the whole bit, then move to your next grit. If you have a spot that's not coming out with the grit your using you need to go back to a coarser grit to remove it and go through them again. Its about making the sanding scratches finer & finer until its silky smooth. But you cannot move to a finer grit until everything looks the same. I'll start with an 80 grit or a grinding stone first to remove bad damage. But good 1st go fa sure!

Looked like they both did well. I've been looking at some of these wood handled axes a little heavier than the husky and x27. I just can't make up my mind

Thanks for the compliment and yes Sir you are correct on the method described to get everything out. But, the person it is for didn't want every imperfection removed.

Finally made some progress tonight. Got a nice tight fit and all that’s left is cutting the fawns foot and final sanding. The step wedge split the wood sticking out of the top a little bit, not a big deal but it’s ugly. Notice how much the wood is mushrooming above the axe...that bee word ain’t going nowhere.

My wife never knows what to get for me Christmas (says I’m hard to buy for...) and wants me to start coming up with stuff already for next year. Well, thanks to these axe threads I want some axes (nicer than my cheapy).

Can you guys recommend a few splitting axes i should be looking at in the $200-250 range?

I’m so broke I don’t even know what your options are in that range except for GB and a couple others. There’s quite a few good axes out there, I get my axes cheap at flea markets and such. Then restore/rehandle them.

I go through the same thing with my wife except she tells me my “wants” are “too big”. Lol

It’s a kelly man. They good. That’s bout all I got for ya. The true temper will be stamped on plenty of the Kelly axes. Very nice axes

Kelly’s are the *s-word. I stole some little paragraph from a blade forum. I’ll drop it in. You got a winner there
