I've been sanding down handles they are too flat so i sanded and rounded them they are very comfortable now.
Just test fitting now I'm still working on the handles i'm going to stain and seal them.20170530_203305.jpg 20170530_193329.jpg

I love pulling them out for the first time to see how there cleaning up.

Do you rinse the vinegar off? Do they have to be soaked in oil afterwards?

I just used bar oil lol
I don't mind a little rust as long as it's smooth and don't hang up in wood.
That's why i didn't soak the other heads they had a nice patina and no rough rust.

Just about made him sick when i told him i could get handles for 7.00 lol
They are extremely uncomfortable now unusable really at least to me they are.

I saw a guy that had a beautiful Norlund hatchet that he paid a welding shop to cut the head off of a Estwing hammer and weld it on. He was just proud as punch of the nice collectible perfectly good hatchet job he had done, pun intended.

They oldtimers I've been talking to said any single bit was a felling or splitting wedge.
I'm guessing that's why i have found dozens of double bits and just a few single bits
I'm going to hit up some of the old loggers when i get time.

Same fella is where I got most of the heads I now use. He did not believe a wood handle could be put on to stay. So the double bit Kelly Works, splitting maul, even a machinists hammer I made into a wedge pounder with a broken axe handle. The one pickaroon was found in the woods and I handled it and pinned that handle. The reason I put some red paint on is so it can be found in the woods and not lost.

I think they also used to use them for bucking with a hand saw. drive 'em in the kerf to keep it open.

Finished up the three.
i used the fireaxe to split wood worked excellent good weight and profile the double and single are sharpened ready to use.
I used red mahogany and teak so i can spot my handles anywhere if one of my firewood friends tries to borrow them lol
One of them has my old Kelly's perfect i will get it back when we cut again.1496362733467-168551162.jpg 20170601_194439.jpg
