Surprises me about that Ohmygosh Ochsenkopf !!

I’d definitely re-hang that head, it’s pretty good stuff for being new nowadays. I’d probably also get a longer handle on it

I wonder why they would have utilized that handle? For the reputation they carry, you'd think they'd know better.

The Stihl is the same as the Ochsenkopf, except that the Stihl has the handle protector. I sanded away the Stihl paint on the bottom of the handle to check the grain orientation, then gave it a puddle of BLO

That ox looks wrong like mine was
It certainly does !!!

I’ve got a little itch to see if I can make a handle for myself for it before it splits like yours (and potentially worse).

Is it best to use heartwood or no ?

Going to have to sand down my little Stihl to see about its grain, that picture above looks like it might also be the wrong direction

I usually use a belt sander, but for $17 you need to get a Pferd Combi File if you want to sharpen your vintage axe.
Incredibly efficient & will give you a KEEN edge!
Ask me how I know!😎
Barely brushed my thumb across the edge.

Probably fine unless you abuse it. I think no on heartwood if you mean center pith. I think also no on sapwood. So…yeah heartwood not pith not sapwood.

Got a couple at a garage sale. Prices were agreeable. Plumb and a Hults Bruk 3 1/2 lbs. Got them cleaned up a bit and now I need to hang the Hults. Have never done it. Been watching a few videos...
