FYI:
The trick to shaping handles is, a drill mounted flap wheel (various sizes) & NEVER mess with the thin front eye side of the handle.
Always sand the back only.
Do the "3 step saw" trick in the Kerf, & if you plan on keeping it, glue the wedge.

Cross wedges are for loose heads only IMHO, I never use them for an original hang.

That’s a lovely axe good colour o; that handle too

Thank you, the one that isn’t polished that’s how it’s looked since new, heat treat marks for hardened bit and poll. The handles are just hickory, all original is a whiskey river handle and polished has one from the local hardware store. But I like the hardware store one better, more elliptical shaped.

Used to be $5 handles, but now $7!!!
28" they need LOTSO work but they are Hickory & have good grain ORIENTATION.
Bought one yesterday for the 3.5# Rixford "R57" (1957).
Basically a curved handle Miners Axe.
I like em short & heavy (no women jokes!).

FINALLY got the 2.25# Woodslasher mounted on a 26" handle (glued White Oak wedge).

Havent had time to work on axes lately & this one has taken about 4 times longer than I anticipated (BUNCHO handle reshaping).
Murphy's Law was all up in this one!

I had HIGH hope's about the balance vs. head/handle length & it didnt disappoint!
In fact it is better than I hoped!

On that Hudson Bay hatchet, I just mixed Walnut Stain with BLO.
Gonna do the same with the Woodslasher.

Looking for a 3lb Jersey or Kentucky pattern head.
3 lbs (+/- a ounce or two).
I'd be willing to trade any of David's axes (lol) or I have a bunch of good ones on hand here for trade.
Or Postal MO if you have one you'd sell.

Old Rusty US Steel...
2 are 3.5# 32" Swedes tho (Early Stamp Wetterlings).
Those are two of my favorites, but to be honest, under a file, they are soft compared to the US Steel.
In fairness, they aren't designed to be...

Geared more towards Softwoods than Hardwoods, they are extremely well balanced & that's part of the attraction for me.

4 I picked up recently...

6lb Ludell splitting maul, made in Japan (No Wear Safety Glasses Stamp).
3 3/4lb Mann Edge Tool Knot Klipper (Toe is a little worn so it needs minor edge work)
2lb Mann Edge Tool hatchet head.
2 1/4lb Shapleigh Hardware Boys Axe.

I may sell the Shapleigh (I have a MUCH nicer one) but will hang & keep the others.

Post em up Boys!

I've been using these two for firepit duty the last 3 or 4 weeks.
EXCELLENT combo!
26" 2.25lb Woodslasher & 28" 4lb Mann True American.

The 28" Mann is very well rounded.
Its splits really well, chops excellent & would be a good companion to a chainsaw (Wedge Pounder).
I've never actually sharpened either (quick diamond stone on the edges), the heads were reasonably sharp before I mounted them.
I need to give both a proper sharpening.

I keep telling myself "I dont burn wood for heat, I dont burn wood for heat"!
It never takes!

I keep cutting & splitting!
Good fodder to use my axes to see which ones shine on the splitting stump I guess?
Havent burned wood for heat in 3 years, yet I keep cutting! Lol

Find ya old Mann Edge Tool or Rixford head & start "Ringing" them (I use a gnagahyde hammer) compared to other vintage Axe Heads...

Both are hard to beat & I doubt you'll ever beat a Rixford (Made in Vermont), I have a 3.5# Michigan ('57) & 3.5# Jersey ('49) Rixford.

Highly prized for their heat treat, the Rixfords ring like a Church Bell on Sunday!
The older Mann's arent far behind.

I like those posts on the web where someone shows their mega expensive axe laying on its side, bragging that they used it all day, & how awesome it is...
Not a mark on em. Lol

These two aren't mega expensive axes bye any means, but you would have to spend A LOT more to beat em.

Just SUPER happy with that 4lb Mann True American.
It does everything excellent (I havent felled or banged wedges with it YET!).

But you can choke up on it & cut just as fine kindling as that 1.25# Woodslasher hatchet (chops/splits ABOVE paygrade).

Usage marks abound on these two. Lol
