This piston is out of a Dolmar 5100S and I was wondering if I could clean / polish it up and reuse it with a new ring?

Those are my findings as well. If I could throw a $40 meteor in it I would have it ordered. OEM is around $90 and the only after market I see is from Little Red barn that is cheap but I wont use it.

If I planned to keep the saw until it or I met an end, and the cylinder cleaned up well, I may use it.

If it ever were to go up for sale, big nope.

under the first scenario, I would take care to only remove any high spots and not unduly reduce the diameter.

Just use a straight edge to check for high spots. It will never feel smooth but no bumps is all that matters. This part of your piston should never touch anything anyway. They have a taper built in called the barrel shape. Fattest part is the middle of the piston or there abouts.
