I was under the assumption the 400 was a pretty damn good saw off the get go? What did they change or need to change?
They dumped the Mag piston. Supposedly, some caught on fire and discontinued the MS-362 (dropped 400.1 displacement)

If I were making a video, it would be after a significant break in tank count. They get way better, but it definitely takes some time.
I also favor the 500i resemblance.
Can’t wait to see Randy stuff the bananas into one of these!

I find it highly unlikely a mag piston caught on fire.
The story goes that someone used a spark plug that was too hot, but I really found it tough to believe myself. I'm sure we will never get a straight answer from Stihl on....well, anything.

I had to google it. Mag foil will ignite at 883* Fahrenheit. If an engine is an air pump, and air cools metal, IDK how hot a mass of Magnesium would have to get to ignite? Seems fishy to me too.

I would almost guarantee it is bs, reason I say this if this was the actual case Stihl would most certainly have to do a safety recall and stick aluminum pistons in every 400 out there or buy them back/trade for the new one. This would be a major safety issue to have a saw light on fire and not be able to be put out. And they have no control over what you put in for a spark plug not that I believe even the hottest plug in that series could make it happen.

Most new Stihls that we test run after mods take about 15 pulls to fire up. Doing 6 or 8 in a row can be tough....
Seems like some of the old poulan and mac videos I’ve seen the operator was happy it fired by the 15-20th pull and was running on 25 but I realize that’s an old saw and since husky puts a primer on everything now if a saw doesn’t start in 2-3 pulls it’s hard starting.

I would not be unhappy to see Stihl use primer bulbs...

It's pretty nice not running the 562 for months, tossing it in the bed of the truck in the rain/snow/whatever to bounce around heading to the woods, then having it pop on the first or second pull. I mean, I'll strike a round of hickory 27 times with a maul to get it to open up so I don't need to have this feature, but it's nice.
