Chain was sharp when I started cutting with the stock saw. It's cut a good 30-40 cookies since I started. Might get another second or 2 out of a sharp chain.
That's about a 25" maple log thats been cut for maybe 5 or 6 years. It's amazing how much harder it is the further I get from the ends. It locks up the clutch with my 346 with a race chain and was pretty hard on the cutters

I cut some ash the other day. I think it is more chain humbling than oak, red oak anyhow. I looked at the chain with a magnifier after, it was hard on the steel for sure!

DW, I milled that big 'ol ash and it wasn't bad on my chains at all.

Somehow, some way, ash brings up sand in the wood or bark as it grows. I dropped a few eab ash last year and cut them up 2 weeks ago. The chain was throwing sparks even at the start and middle of a cut on nearly every block, nowhere near the ground. Even after sitting through spring melt and all the rain we had this summer and fall

I have heard that Locust does that also in some soils. When I cleared some when my brother built a house in Garrison NY, you had to buck it the day you dropped it, or sharpen chain every 3 or 4 rounds. In other places, I have cut big dead dry Locust w/o any problem at all.

I've had locust roach chains for sure. Hardest wood (chain wise) I've ever processed.
