My first build. 8 pin with stock oregon cl 16". I think it could still use some tuning and chain touch up. 12" cherry.

Yes - FHC 4 part thread start to finish with many pics. Just look for

" Stihl 038 Super to ported 038 Mag build -Part #4 finished!!! " in the Chainsaws and power equipment section. The first 3 threads are linked to the 4th thread like Mastermind did with the 6 part "performance tuning" series.
It's the ninth tread down right now. The teal is darker than the Makita green and the dark charcoal looking is actually a black flake - had the can sitting around. I think it is a Ford color.

Mdavlee 385 average of two cuts was 8.4 secs. No suprise here that it was fastest.

Strap On ported xpw, (he says this saw beat his 395 and matched his 390xp and 066 he ported...OK....) average cut time was 9.7 secs, it's a fast but peaky saw. I dont like the 13k limited coil on it.

Average was 10.1, my 2171 with a xpw cylinder I've messed with. Port timing is not changed other than transfer walls raised to base, base gasket delete and a wj71 carb.

All were on safe side for tunes and can be turned up. Not a exact science comparison but a rough idea of what's what.

Might be just what the 372 needs, an 8 pin should drop your loaded rpm so you're not bouncing off that coil. Might be worth a try.

Or try fattening it up Mason, some saws need to be pig rich Wot to be good in the cut. It's the nature of diaphragm carbs. They are never perfect the entire range. That's why tuning in the cut is best.
On a stock saw they are good enough, but when we start pulling more out of our saws, they need more adjustments depending on variables.
This is why mtronic and auto tune is so elegant, it constantly adjusts for all conditions.

That 372 was way rich. It will pick up leaned out. It went from limiter to 4 stroke. Limited coil it should be on it constantly no load.

I messed with the 372 today and completely changed its character with some of my own changes. Different muffler with single big port under deflector (the previous gasket, heat shield and muffler wasn't even port matched), stock flywheel with no advance (I don't know why it was advanced in first place...372s don't seem to like it) and a 13.3k 372 coil instead of the 385 13k coil. I had no unlimited coil and 13.3k makes it a bit easier to tune and off the limiter in the wood. Here's same log with semi chisel new out of the box untouched... it impressed me getting the same cut times with semi chisel as it did the square ground chain in the other video. It's a lot harder to stall now and probably would be even faster with lower rakers and a few filings on chain. Saw sounds better too, I think it was popping before possibly, and interestingly it idles much better coming out of cuts.

I'm sure it's the Stihl bar that made it run and sound better.
