Every other internal combustion engine I've ever been around the main determining factor in torque was stroke. IH 400 series longer stroke, broader and stronger torque range. John Deere 400 series, more bore, more rpms, peakier torque curve. AMC 401,six inch stroke ,surprise everybody. Ford 5.0 oversquare, force the air and catch them on the big end. So saws are different?

That's not true. A IH 400 series runs more RPM's than any of the other engines you mentioned. Torque is not only a direct result from more stroke. It's all about engine design- rod-stroke ratio, cam grind profile, cylinder head design. A long rod shorter stroke motor will develop more torque than a long stroke short rod motor.

It's late and I'm not digging out the specs but I'm sure the JD engine has more bore and less stroke stock than an IH. And the IH makes more more torque over a broader rpm than the Deere. And what in my statement was untrue? Since when does an IH or Deere tractor engine in stock form make more rpm than a 5.0 Ford or a any other V-8 automotive engine?

I've been up since 330.... got my 394 mostly together.... 175 psi. should be nice. question, the choke rod is kinda floppy when its pulled out. its the one with the wire end, not the snap in one. should I just get the snap in one and call it a day?

A JD 466 is 4.75 stroke and IH 466 is 5.35. Yes an IH has a broader torque range but it's not just because of the stroke and your statement saying longer stroke usually runs less RPM isn't true in this instance. All the IH 466's are usually governed at 2650-2850 RPM where as the JD 466 was never taken above 2400. This is all in stock application of course. I don't remember what your statement about the 5.0 V8, I have interest in gas V8s so I didn't pay attention to it.

I didn't state longer stroke runs less rpm. I stated the Deere runs more I should have said the Deere has to run more rpm to make the same hp with a peakier torque curve. The rest of my post stands.

I think the wire ones are for a 395 but could be wrong.
