It runs like it does from flow and direction instead of velocity.

In other words there is more than one way to skin a cat.
and we all know all cats are different and how we go if we try to herd cats in one direction

I am liking this discussion!

The last 660 I did I tried to decrease capacity but it didn't help.

I think when the motor is spinning at about 13000 rpm, there is a lot more going on than we mere humans can comprehend.
I really believe that every saw will be different, with so many air flow and fuel variables even on like models.

Jay, if you have found one that is out of your line of thinking that runs like a scalded cat, which it obviously does, measure it very closely to see if you can find the difference.

perhaps fill the transfers with water and measure volumes compared to your others?
It doesn't hurt this saw to have the best timed stock cylinder I've seen.
Stock it was 98 117 76

so a saw with not enough case volume would essentially be a screamer with crazy fast throttle response that won't make much useable power
And a saw with to much case volume would likely be lazy feeling with dead throttle response?
There are too many other variables to make a statement like that.

Understood. I'm just trying to wrap my head around the case volume to cylinder displacement thing.
Sorry if it came across as a statement. I ment it as more of a question.;) Kinda thinking out load in a way.

Whats the best way to measure case volume?
On automotive heads i have seen guys use a saringe full of fluid marked in cc's and fill the chamber with a chunk of plexi glass bolted to the head with a hole in it to fill the chamber ,if a guy cut a hole for the rod to pop through ,should be able to bolt plexi glass to the case and fill to the glass level and do the math on how much fluid it took ,could do the piston as well and add together ?

Here's a 026 I used a different method on
Piston is stock and the factory chamber angle was kept, lowered 030 100 120 76
And a measly 185lbs of compression

That lil guy runs good ,i never use 50 cc on wood that size because so slow normally .

When I worked at ftz we built custom heads and used a syringe and a peice of glass to cc them.
Definate Dave posted 064/066 660 case capacity
Seems like it would have to be measured with crank in place ?? i think the 460 crank is bigger /wider than the 440 one
I am not sure if you remember John Perry from oregon ,He started JP Racing which made my chassis in the early 90's ,he later sold the company to lonestar racing ,he carved out heads with removable chambers before prodesign did ,i had one of the early heads with replaceable chambers ,it got sold on one of my old bikes though

You guys have wrecked all my theories. LOL
Randy ,the saw Simon did for me ,has untouched transfers and head ,180 psi i think without a gasket and is an excellent running saw ,not a hotrod like the fingerported one ,but pulls a 32 and .404 in softwoods fine ,am sure in a cant cutting contest it will lose ,but most guys are not racing when felling trees ,just want the power good and smooth in the cut .Working on sidehills ,i like that saw because when i shut it off it pulls over easier to restart ,a guy up in a tree climbing likes the same thing .

The 066 is stronger than any I've have built or ran but it has a lot of time spent on the transfers, I can get close to it in a few hours where it would take all day for me to try and duplicate it,it wouldn't be practical for me to try and build work saws like it simply from a time stand point. Now a play saw or my own saw is different. I have one good cylinder at 97 117 78 that I'm going to try it on.

I use to build high compression saws but stumbled on a different way and now there all around 180/190 and will clobber the 230lb ones.
Just when you think you have it figured out something comes along and tells you that you don't.
