Good afternoon. Need a few tips for Echo 225 String Trimmer.
Just installed new OEM Zama carb. I can't get it to start when it's cold. But a tiny little shot of starting ether gets it running, and it stays running.
Question: If it starts with a shot of ether, does that mean I need to give it a touch more fuel on the low speed side? Revving it up from idle is fine, no bogging.
While it's running, it runs smooth as butter.

The low speed screw is open 2 3/4 turns, and it seems fine if it's warm and it's running. But that cold startup is screwing with my head. Thanks in advance.

Are you putting the air filter cover on before trying to cold start it? If the “prevent plate” (what the air filter knob screws into) is bent, the knob shaft can keep the choke from closing. Otherwise, look for a cracked or loose carburetor insulator/manifold.

The carburetor on an SRM-225 has no hi/low setting screws. Did you take the tiny black plastic plug out on the side of the carb to adjust it??

Actually there is a high and low side adjustment
The low is straight down the top of the throttle shaft, OEM will usually have a plug, the high side is down on the side centered just above the fuel nipples.

Yep, they're concealed pretty well but they're there, at least on the two samples I've worked on.

I think 2 3/4 out is a lot, I have been working on some trimmers lately and 1 turn out is a good starting point. Also, make sure that your idle screw is not to far in, it should be just barely opening the butterfly.

I bot a spark tester for all of 6.95. AT IDLE, DURING DAYLIGHT, there is a faint glow. When I nail the throttle, and hold the RPM's up, the light inside the spark detector looks a whole lot brighter. I never bot one of these testers before, so I don't know what to expect. Is that normal that the intensity of the spark increases along with RPM's? I been suspecting the coil because the old lady dropped the trimmer onto concrete from a height of 5 feet. That definitely effed up the carb, but now I'm wondering about the coil. So if the coil is dim at idle, and bright at high RPM, does that sound like the coil needs to be replaced? Or is that a normal condition? Thanks

When those coils fail, they cut in and out or totally lose spark. Something on the circuit board had a faulty connection, but it didn’t cause a weak spark, just intermittent. An adjustable tester will show you how strong the coil is.

There's a cheapo used OEM coil avail for about 20. I'll bite the bullet and put it in. I was outside in the dark watching the spark at low idle. It does drop off briefly for a fraction of a second every now and then.

If there is a numeral 1 in brackets on the top of the coil it is the most recent version that has been upgraded.
