I’m not an expert, but I’ve noticed one clear indication

See the threaded holes on the front face, down near the bottom ?

I’ve never seen a 394 with them. They’re for mounting the wrap protection plate

Sounds like you have a 395 piston, they have a shorter skirt and would cause the intake timing to fall close to there.
How do the Meteor pistons fall out? More 395 than 394?

This is correct. My 394 built in 1993 does not have the plate mounting boss and threaded holes. The 394 made in 1998 that belongs to my employer does.

Safe to say if there aint no holes, then for sure it’s a 394............ ?

Remind me how to tell what the year is ...... I’ve got a few 394’s here ......... all without the holes. Mayhaps one is a 97 ..........

It's very interesting the various idiosyncrasies they've done over the years to the saws. Looking at the IPL's helps.
