Someone on the local Craigslist just posted an 046R that "looks" to be in very good condition. The original sticker on the handle, air filter cover, and chain brake are still intact and legible, very little paint scratches or flaking, and the wrap handle is not beat up at all. I think the asking price is a bit wishful at $900 but I have no idea what these go for. I live near an expensive area so easily add 25% or more to whatever you think is reasonable. The median home price in the county was 1.1M for 2025.

900 is very close if it’s minty
Dang. It sure looks minty. I was hoping I could offer more like 600-700 without being insulting. The last one I saw posted was at $1k and the guy told me he didn't get any takers. I think I'll offer $750 and see what happens.

It is called haggling...it is a lost art!!
It is a lost art and many people have no finesse. Whenever I try and sell something on the local Craigslist I always get a handful of replies that simply ask "What's the lowest price you'll take?" That's not haggling!!

046s and 044s in good condition have doubled in value the last couple of years. $750 is a legit offer.
We agreed on $800. It turned out to be the same guy I had already bought a 10mm 044 and a 461 from. I'll be picking it up Monday morning. I have to stop buying chainsaws.

The 046 is an overlooked saw. I bought two new ones for the fire program I worked at when they first came out and the hotshot crew saw squad guys loved them. Of course, all those guys are in their late 40's/early 50's now.
Interesting when you think about what it turned into. The 460 and 461 are widely considered two of the best saws ever made

I've read the bore and stroke didn't change from 046 to 460 and 461. What did they change?

There was a run of bad bearings in 1997 that killed the 046's reputation for a time. They're still one of the best saws ever made. I never had a 461 but it still has a strong following here.

Not too many differences between the 046 and 460 - carbs, ignitions, cylinders. Same bore and stroke. I don't know much about the 461 other than it has a different cylinder and piston.

461 has the more current style front fed transfer ports. 046 and 460 are side fed and identical other than flippy caps. Most of the parts other than the recoil, cylinder and case are the same among the 3

And sometimes works out better than expected if you hold your cards close which is also a part of haggling
FB mkt $1500 brand new 500iR asked bottom line price hoping they might come back $25-50 less, they came back at $1100 if I picked it up right away nearly broke my neck getting out the door.

Was not looking for a wrap handle or the 20" bar and chain but for the price I can live with it.

Me: 10 rupee
Her: 95 rupee

Her: (punches me in the shoulder) then yells "I say 100 you say 10. I say 95 you say 15. Why you talk like that? I say 100 you spose say 80."

That reminds of a story my dad told me. At the local flea market a guy had a basket of small toys he was selling for 25 cents each and someone grabs a toy and says "Would you take a nickel?" The seller takes the toy from the person's hand and proceeds to crush it with his foot while saying "Here's what I think of your 'nickel'."
