How have you been doing Jeremy, has recovery gone well?
Not too bad now Mike.How have you been doing Jeremy, has recovery gone well?
Mine has 3 bolts I believe. Interesting the little changes on the series over time.I believe the early 046s had 3 bolt coils instead of 2 bolt, but don't know what if any difference there was in performance.
I just cut the key .020 which usually works well.
In terms of jug variations, it likely ranks first in the Stihl lineup. More different jugs than you can shake a stick at.Mine has 3 bolts I believe. Interesting the little changes on the series over time.
Do you want a case redone Mike? New bearings and seals?Well, I finally checked out the last of the 8 046/460s (5 046s and 3 460), I finally found a case with good bearings and seals, but there was an air leak at the base gasket. Ironically, this saw also had a 046 tank holder on it (usually it is the other way around).
The jug on this saw is a Hemi, but looks real nice. The squish band is wide, and the combustion chamber looks almost just like the D jug. I'm impressed. All 3 are Mahle, but the two Hemi jugs look very different.
Hey, I'd like to hear from others just to make sure, but I think I know how to ID a D jug w/o removing it from the saw. The bases on both my Hemi jugs are tapered front and back (but not on the sides). The D jug base is straight up and down on all 4 sides. Are they all like this?
I put the jug on the 460 case w/o base gasket and got squish of .018. I'll have to see if I like it there, and how well it runs. I still need some parts. I have 3 top covers, but no filter covers, one good clutch, but no drums, washers, bearings, or clips. Several of the cases have chain adjusters, but only one had the chain brake linkage, and that seems to be the hardest part to get (non OEM). I did get a few carbs, coils and flywheels, but will have to see if any of them are any good. I didn't get any recoils, top handles or brake flags, but luckily I have some of them in stock.
I'll likely steal some parts from my 460 tomorrow and see if I can get this thing to run. Will likely do the 046 next, but I also think the Asian 440 hybrids will be arriving soon, and I'm anxious to see how they will run (and at least all the parts should be there)!
Will be very interesting to compare the Hemi Jug, D Jug, and the Asian Big Bore.
When I do the D jug I plan to use the case it came on, it will have a "correct" SN, plus I just think it was a cool # 136 333 366. I'll also use the best of the 3 046 tank handles I have (one is pretty beat up). I'll have to start ordering some parts.
Very interesting! I bet those late 460’s run good. Probably that small outlet muffler didn’t let them perform as good stock as the early saws? That can be fixed though . LolIn terms of jug variations, it likely ranks first in the Stihl lineup. More different jugs than you can shake a stick at.
JJ was involved in some of this. Stihl recalled many 046 “back in the day” and had dealers grind a lip outa the intake ports. The lip was catching fuel and making the saw bog/stall after a long idle.
IMHO, the nicest jugs are the late 460 jugs. The ports are huge compared to the early 460 jugs. But huge isn’t always better, and for a hybrid, smaller ports may have more velocity.
@jacob j.
I'm looking forward to seeing how this "classic" will run! Not sure if I have all the parts I need, but with 8 non running 046/460s, I should come close!
Any one else notice that Hemi jugs bases are slanted front + back but D jugs are straight up (square) all around? I'm just going based on the 3 cylinders I currently have (all Mahle).
