A few years ago, near the end of Tax Season, I had 15 minutes between appointments so I went on Craig's List and found a pristine 046 mag (original dp muff + D cylinder) Cream Puff, in great shape. I called the guy and he agreed to hold it for me until "tomorrow", as I was willing to pay full price.
I called the next day to pick up my saw, and he informed me that he already sold it. I don't need another saw, but this is the one that got away, and I wanted one.
So a few weeks ago I fix a MS 460 for a local tree guy, and he apologizes as he (his words) is paying me with two stripped, junk saws, a MS 460 and an 046.
The 460 was complete junk. Did not have a cylinder, the crank was bad and had ruined the case, bearings were shot, and the tank handle was broken. About the only good part left was the chain adjuster!
The 046 was also pretty well stripped, but it still had a jug on it, and the tank holder was not broken. Bearings + Seals were shot, but when I scrapped the dirt off of it, the SN was 136 333 366. I knew that was early enough to be a D jug saw, plus I thought all the 3s and 6s were cool!
The back half of the muffler was still on the saw, and it had that huge 5/8" hole (instead of the later puny 3/8" hole), but all the screws were "Allen", not T-27, so I feared the jug was not original.
To my surprise, it did have a D jug that seems to be in very good condition! IMO, that alone makes the saw worth the deal.
So, I have a 046 tank handle, 046 cases, and an 046 D jug. I can re create the saw that got away, and mod it a bit in the process (no porting, but maybe a base gasket delete and timing advance).
