Hahaha. With his MS290 Farm Boss!
I could cut that whole tree up with an MS290 but would prefer to use more suitable options. I would start out with an 018/MS180, then go up to a Stihl 026, then a Stihl 039, then an 046, then an MS660 and perhaps my Stihl 070 just to give it some exercise... (plus it has a 41" bar on it)
On a job like this I bring a lot of saws and if I bugger a chain I just grab a different saw. I do file every other fill up or as required. This tree is less than 10 miles away so that's helpful. I should hear something back by the end of the week. He said he'd let me know either way.

Never heard anything else on the tree job. I drive by there on Sundays so I'll look to see if it's been cut up or still waiting... The weather here is still really hot and I've had a super busy week so not sure I could've fit it into my schedule anyway. If it got cut up I'd have to think he did it himself as I'm pretty sure I didn't get underbid.

Free, would be the only way to underbid it.

What goes into pricing a job like this, I've never done one of these other than for myself. I would probably have quoted like $300 or something and thought I did real good.

Dump truck and trailer, Cat backhoe with clam bucket or 312 with thumb, chipper, dump trailer, saws, rakes, someplace to dump stump and topsoil. Make it like it was not even there. If he wants to keep wood, price goes up, look for saw logs or sell as firewood.

There is a difference between a pro with insurance, equipment, etc and a non pro with a saw and not worried about his own time or the cleanup of other than the wood (no stump removal, no chipping, no insurance).

I understand both ends.

I think your price was very fair. There was a white oak that fell I a guys yard I ended up cutting up. At first he was gonna try and cut it up with a stihl 290 with 18 inch bar. Found out quick he was gonna need a bigger saw. I took a my 066, 7900, and 361. The tree measured 54 at the base. Carpenter ants had it all ate out at the bottom. Got a wind storm and down it came. I got a couple slabs out of it to make table tops. But it takes alot of work and the know how to cleanup a mess like the one you have.

That is why you need heavy equipment, don't see how you could make money cutting them up like that.

Went by there today and saw it was in the process of being cut up. Probably the guy is doing it himself. He has quite a bit of it smallerized but hasn't gotten into the big wood yet. I was contemplating what I would say if he called me to take it from about the 1/2 way point to completion. Maybe the same number of $1350? lol.
I wouldn't want to pay someone to do something I can do myself but I'm wondering if he's gonna wish he bit the bullet and shelled out the bucks... I don't think he's the property owner but maybe the son or brother of the owner. (no one lives there now). The man I was dealing with seemed to be older so probably had experience with cutting larger trees. I get by there at least once a week so we'll see what kind of progress is made on it. If nothing else it was an interesting possibility.

You may think you did real good until you got to the main trunk, are taking 10 minutes per cut and finding metal in the tree with your chains. And then there's that root ball...

I've bucked some big stuff over 60" and it's no fun really. A big saw with 36-42" bar buried will drink fuel quick. That's probably a 5-7 gallon tree to cut up firewood length

My 395 with a 36" bar buried will use a tank every 15 mins or so. And thats a hell of a tank.
