Why are these seals used in these saws? And is there something special one needs to know in order to properly install them?
I’ve tried both in an 020T trying to stop an intermittent air leak.
The saw tunes normally and runs great at power. But occasionally when at idle the engine will suddenly speed up (chain running now) and then, unless I do something to help it, it will sputter and stop. You can spin, shake, turn over and over the saw and it will make no difference to either the “high” idle when it’s going, or the normal “correct” idle when it’s running. Just sometimes it takes off and then sputters to a stop.
Driving me nuts. Help!??

Throw them in the trash and order Stihl 026 flywheel seals.

I’ve already done that. I see I didn’t make that clear.I still have the very same problem. Is it possible the crank has worn beyond that required to seal properly?

Could it be fuel? I’ve replaced the fuel line and put the latest greatest filter in it.

Did you do a pressure and vac test?

No, how do you do it ? I’ve got the pump and the carb adapter as well as the rubber seals and metal plates for the exhaust that fit the rear handle saws but blocking the exhaust has got me stumped on this saw.

Does your pump do both pressure and vacuum? The exhaust will be a challenge. I made a steel block of plate with rubber innertube material on one side and bolt it to the exhaust outlet.

Yes I have a pump that will do both. I haven’t tried yet but I wonder if the muffler can be removed w/o taking it all apart. I guess I just gotta do what I got a do. At one time I saved a busted top handle so it could be used for a pressure test with the tank and handle both removed. Was gonna saw off what I needed. I can’t find the damn thing now.

Yes muffler comes right out. Getting back in with gasket is a challenge.

Only experience I have is a Teflon front crank seal for
a 12v Cummins. They have to be installed dry. The seal transfers some material to the crank when first run is my understanding. If the parts oiled this can’t takes place and you end up with a leak.

Dinner over? Make a block off plate out of something ridged.
Naw, washed my hands, watched some tv and went to bed. I’d been messing with it all day. Time for a walk , so to speak.

Ok, b here we go. Case holds pressure and vacuum. Can pull it thru and the needle just bounces around and returns. The little bastich is running out of gas! 12619B00-C7A1-45FB-9180-20BBF58BBA79.jpeg9C7E79A1-01EE-4CB2-8D55-C2FD01E35A68.jpeg587C6934-7595-4469-A914-7F86ED80561A.jpeg
If you look hard you can see it’s got the 026 (oem)$
oil seals in now.

I ordered a carb for it. I’ve already been thru this one. Saw has a new fuel line and filter, correctly installed. The tank vent is thru the new fuel line and I was able to blow thru the actual vent. When I went thru the carb I removed and replaced this tiny oblong shaped Welch plug. Even though I used nail polish to help seal it I’m not confident I did. As I said it’s tiny and thin and looks like it’d be tough to properly install. I done dicking with it.
If the new carb don’t fix it I’ll always thought it should have.

I'm thinking it might very well fix it. Should have tried the carb in the first place. I hope it isn't a China knock off carb?

I put it back together and went out back and ran two tanks thru it without a hickup! Now that it’s been figured out, it’s trying to make me believe it’s fixed. F%#*ing machines. image.jpg
This was the first top handle I’ve needed to press/vac check. I always thought it would be impossible to do. It’s actually very easy to do and is something I will incorporate into every top handle build I do in the future. I already do it for all the rear handles I do.
Again, thanks for the help.
