Honestly I usually try and find couch cushions and cut the foam padding into blocks to pack around the bagged saw.
Sans piss stains , as the best place to find couch cushions are along the roadside ,FYI never take the middle cushion!

That's a great idea.... And I'll stay away from the middle cushions! :D

I view shipping a saw as an opportunity to avoid going to the recycling center. I typically recycle Stihl boxes from work, they are sturdy cardboard. I always fully take the bottom, wrap the saw in a heavy trash bag and then pack it in with the appropriate size plastic bottles. I normally add a piece of cardboard on top and then tape the top shut. I have sent out several hundred over the years without issue.

Bought a 064,066,and a 084 off a guy,who was a collage teacher ex faller.
They were all in one box with an empty dog food bag as packing. Wraps had been removed, holes in the box from the spikes.
Everything made it surprisingly unbroken, the reason they survived was they came by bus and only had one bus change on the way.
Felt pretty lucky

I get a little anal with this...

This is what i do if im sending out a PH for some reason:
1. Double bag the PH in heavy duty contractor bags after emptying gas and oil, zip tie shut and trim excess
2. find heavy box that is roughly 1.5" bigger than the PH all around
3. Take a can or two of high expansion great stuff foam, empty the can into the bottom of the can, place bagged PH in the foam and let it expand around
4. Once cured, use another can of great stuff in any gaps to really hold everything
5. Tape up and send

I know I know, OCD on the packing but id rather take the extra time a few dollars more to protect my PH instead of attempting to file a claim if something happened:)

I toss in a couple dryer sheets one in the bag and one in the packaging.
As well as a bunch of stuff already mentioned.
Here getting old plastic bottles means getting some money back at the recycle center
