Fired the saw this morning. Seems to have a bit more attitude..

Sorry guys life got in the way. At the dentist with the gf, she may have to get a root canal or wisdoms pulled. :(

Nice job Joe! Definitely not as strong as the echo , but the echo has 10 cc's on it though so no surprise there. You woke it up nice though!!!

Not as much of a gain as I was hoping for, had a couple variables working against me, the test log had grown a bit and couldn't resist a few test cuts on the chain.

Figure it gained 500-800 in the cut and a broader powerband. This thing has torque to spare.
My tach must be faulty.. no way I got 2 saws in a row with the coil limited 3-500 below spec. This limiter kicked in at 13,000 on my tach. Saw is set 12,800 in all cuts.
First comparison. The bars are 68dl
Dolmar 42cc vs 50 for the echo.
This is my limbing test lol.
You may notice the dolmar isn't quite as snappy, think it has something to do with the giant flywheel.. close to the same size as a 372...

Figure this is the more the size wood the dolmar was intended for.
The echo is definitely more wild feeling. Don't think the results would change much with the stock af/and carb.

The dolmar is noticeably smoother in the cut.

In the hand both saws feel the same. Weight and bulk.

Really don't think a lot more is to be had with the 421 without a coil and carb change. It feels about the same weather you are cutting 4" or noodling bar buried. Might not make a cant racer, but I think it is a damn good firewood setup.

My summery,
If you want a solid built, smooth saw get the dolmar.
If you are looking for an underdog with a attitude grab the echo.

Excellent job there Sir...lot of work went into all this info.
I believe your Tac is fine by the way...my 420 just won't rev past 13100 without the reading going all screwy due to the coil limiter bouncing in. I ended up setting it rich and then taking it to when the measurement went nuts ... then opening the H back open till i got 13000 and a 4 stroke sound. All i could do to protect against a false and lean mixture i felt.

Joe with all the extra torque, do you think a higher exhaust or maybe a little less blow down could help speed her up a bit?

Without a unlimited coil an more carb I honestly don't think you can ask for more.

It will 4 stroke right up to the limiter.

I set my port timing around those limiters. With the staggered transfers it really seemed to broaden the powerband. It dosent fall out of the cut like it used to, when ya set the spikes.

Have to remember this is just 42cc, in that 4" stick for example it would hold close to 12k with moderate pressure.

If you raise the ex you may be able to gain a bit under light load. I believe power/speed will fall fast as the size/load increase.
