So without the baffle it seems the pulse may bounce back at the port? Or is it extra restriction it needs

Thats part of the trick
A tuned pipe is designed to give a reflected wave back at an exact time to maximize performance.

I have always liked a more open exhaust to a point and have had better results baffle free with how I port saws.
As I push my porting more and more, I am thinking I may need to asses my thinking around exhaust.

I take a thin cut zip wheel on my dremel and cut the face off the baffle.
I believe the rest of what's left adds structural integrity to the shell.

I have tried that and it helps but I noticed an improvement when I took the whole baffle out on a near stock saw

The only way to properly match the muffler to the jug is to remove the baffles.

It's hard for me to see an improperly matched part to run better.....

And that's why I've removed myself from most discussions about saw performance.

I'd rather just do what I do.

Example of how I matched my 346 muffler to port.
I used a piece of aluminum bar (1/8" x 1"), drilled & tapped 5mm threads to match the muffler mount.
Using the heat shield which was already matched to my ported cylinder, I bolted the muffler to the bar in reverse and matched the heat shield.....

You run em in your hybrids???
No ,those actually do not hurt my ears the way the mufflers are ,my 660 and 026 have baffles though .

Edit : i really like this cover on the 026 ,the tube muffles noise a lot ,and it still runs good ,actually starts easier and idles better ,easier to tune also .

Also, I've started leaving 460/461 baffles un molested, and have even though of putting one on a 044/440.

Anyone have thoughts on this or any experience with it?
I just opened the front of the baffle in one of the 460s mufflers. It run great that way. The other one has no baffle as it was a real early muffler. I did open the hole a lot on the side and added about a 3/4x3/4 front opening or a touch bigger under a deflector.

I cut more of that out if you went on a angle from the top and leave about a 1/2" wide strip to the top. I don't think I have any more 1122 mufflers with guts here to show.
