I saw a xpw posted for sale. Claimed to be ported, this was the picture of the cylinder he posted with the ad. I’m no genius but I don’t see much work done here.... thoughts?
I think it has a fair amount of work done to it, band has been cut and base ona lathe for sure. Lowers have had the shroud lowered like a 390, and all the other ports have definitely been reworked as well, I would say they have done a few cylinders for sure.
I didn’t say there’s anything wrong with the port work. All I said was that edge looked a little bit sharp. I don’t know if they got sanded or not, which is why I said something. And the guy was asking for opinions. If I didn’t know what I was looking for, and came to a place like this looking for advice, I’d be pissed if nobody said anything and I snagged a ring on the exhaust portEdge just looks like it isn't beveled yet to me. Still has marker on the cylinder wall, I think it's unfinished yet in this pic.View attachment 227325
I agree. I thought the port work looked pretty good, myself. The only thing I was commenting on was what appears to be jagged edges on the ex roof and floor. But maybe it’s just the pic being fuzzy or maybe it wasn’t done yet. Who knowsThat cylinder has several hours in it. I like the xpw jug for the extra cc and have done a dozen or more and whoever did it spent some time to get the ports that smooth and symmetrical looking on the transfers.
I think those bevels are enough to not snag a ring. It’s not a big one to ease the rings back in but I would run it without a second thought. All the rings I snagged were in transfers from being greedy with width.
Meh, I saw a guy out west that's taking money for port work say the other day that he's skeptical of the real need to chamfer port edges.I agree. I thought the port work looked pretty good, myself. The only thing I was commenting on was what appears to be jagged edges on the ex roof and floor. But maybe it’s just the pic being fuzzy or maybe it wasn’t done yet. Who knows
Thank you DocGuess the cat is out of the bag.
Questioning whether the cylinder has been touched at all is one of the greatest compliments one can be paid when it comes to porting a cylinder.
That’s nice work and even more remarkable now that it’s clear that it isn’t even finished in the pics.
Here are some pics of a brand new XPW cylinder I will be porting for a customer, I know how much time it takes to get a cylinder to look like what Mike has done, I think the xpw cylinder is one of the hardest to get right and I have to agree with Doc, when people think your work is stock looking, that's an accomplishment. Hope these pics help.View attachment 227342 View attachment 227343 View attachment 227344 View attachment 227345
