I'll take any suggestions on how to measure from anyone. I'm all ears.

Put a ring in the bore and take it all the way to the chamber. Does it expose the non plated area? Be sure to put the ring end pin opening down so you can hook it to remove. Depending on how bright of a light you use can be deceiving from reflection. Use a second ring if necessary. Hope this helps.

For those of you that don't know what the ROD is, it's where the plating ends at the top of the jug where the wall meets the chamber.

The top ring has to end still on plating at TDC, or bad things will happen.

:(

The ring of death in MS-440 jugs made in-house by Stihl was some of the worst I've ever seen. I suspect Stihl was having the jugs made in their Brazilian plant. Some of the jugs had really sloppy ports as well.

Thatsa pretty big ring.... How big was the ring before you machined it? Would the bottom ring be in the intake now? I wonder how it would run and how long it wouldrun like this?

Looks like you really opened the lowers on this one. Just curious if you're trying something new and what you hope to achieve or if that's how you do them all?

Revisited this idea yesterday, when my buddy told me he needed a Saw.

I figured who better to try this jug out on than a guy I'm charging nothing, lives close, and I can have back in business in a day or two.

It just makes it to the top of the top ring if I take no more out of the band

The stock numbers before dropping the jug .020 were 100/127/70

So I took a used piston and sanded the entire band to match the piston domed crown.

All in, I'm about 30 out of the chamber with an .018 squish.

The ROD stayed OK, so I ported the jug.
