Hola

Wife got a weird call yesterday. Lady was looking for my FiL and was reaching out to family. Apparently her great uncle (her father’s uncle) is an MIA presumed KIA in from Korean War.

PHY HERMAN R - RA13458762 - 1953/07/06 - PA - Philadelphia - DOD - 17th Inf Regt-7th Inf Div

On July 6, 1953, a large Chinese Communist Forces (CCF) unit attacked and overran the U.S. Army outposts on Pork Chop Hill in an attempt to seize whatever territory possible before the impending armistice agreement. After fighting for the position for four days, on July 10, the 7th Infantry Division Commander determined that the CCF disregard for casualties and desire to hold the outpost outweighed the position’s tactical value, and ordered a withdrawal that was eventually completed on July 11. The U.S. never again controlled Pork Chop Hill, preventing thorough recovery efforts for those who were killed or went missing during the fighting.

Corporal Herman Raymond Phy, who joined the U.S. Army from Pennsylvania, served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. He went missing on July 6 when Chinese troops overran his unit's outposts on Pork Chop Hill. He was not seen to fall in battle, and due to conditions on the battlefield it was not possible to conduct a search for him. He was not reported to be a prisoner of war. The area where he went missing was not retaken by U.S. forces, and his remains were not identified among those returned to U.S. custody after the ceasefire. Today, Corporal Phy is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

Based on all information available, DPAA assessed the individual's case to be in the analytical category of Under Review.

The lady didn’t specify wether or not his remains were found but my assumption is that if they are calling, they probably want DNA samples of nearest living relative. I’m in awe. She didn’t even know she had a great uncle in the Korean War. Curious to see how this turns out.
