Too damn bad that young man over on Ass Site chose to send his saw all the way to the left coast to that fool, considering the damn saw talent that exists within, or a state or three of him in Pennswhorevania...

Question is .404 worth a shít for milling or is it better to stay 3/8?? It'll be on my 394, thinking 42" bar.
DJ I think the main reason guys don't use 404 as much for milling is the wider kerf means more lost board feet and harder work for the power head. Don't really see another reason to not use it though.

3/8. If you don’t care about the finish, sharper angles will be quicker
I just want to make a couple slabs for end tables. A friend is gonna hook me up with some oak crotches. I thought something like that with character would be nice. I'm hoping to run them through the planer so rough finish won't hurt none. It's not gonna be a bunch of work even if I have to hand finish.

I might stick with 3/8 for that reason. Kinda thought 404 would be a few less cutters to sharpen and less likely to stretch with a chain that long though.

When I made the 2x4's I used my regular hand file, and the finish was pretty good. 3/8 will be just fine. If I mill next week I will take lots of pics. I'm going to use the chains you sent me.

Sounds good Mike. Maybe I should back down to a 36" bar. Might be plenty for what I'm doing.
