Ok guys... Tell me what ya think.

My best friend needs a cheap SUV. He is hell bent on a 5.7 Hemi Durango. I found one for $800 obo, '07, 100k exact miles, but the engines locked. I'm thinking a bent rod or valve, possible fluid leakage into a piston or cylinder well. The RamZ forums have tons of threads about locked 5.7's and say that stuff to, and that it's a relatively easy fix and once the sp/coils/harness/valve cover is off and out and pin point what it is, solve it and it begins to move it's go time from there. Also could run Marvel Mystery Oil through it, that stuff is the shït. What do y'all think? I told him to offer the guy $300 and if it doesn't end up working, part it out or get a junkyard engine but I think it can be fixed. He's an awesome dude and has a new baby and just moved so I'm trying to help him. There's a 2012 at Copart with a damaged fender that's 87k miles and only $2,650 but he don't think he can get it in time.

Plan on a engine swap
He'll need reliability
It didn't lock up for no reason.
Something failed and possibly damaged other internal parts you can't check.
You can prep a replacement motor
Seals, gaskets, water pump and you'll probably be far ahead of working on the old engine.

Those are not the best for gas mileage I'm told.

Same old.
Another day, another busted azz car.
I'm guessing this current failed lifter epidemic is just a fad.
I was talking to Nic about this crap. Seems things go in streaks. We will see a *s-wordload of the same failure for a period of time, then suddenly they just quit.
And a new broken something trend starts.

Whats happening with you?

Alright I'll tell him. Well I could then work on fixing the locked engine and boom, he has 2 then that work. He will be towing a trailer from time to time and will be carrying ladders, buckets ect and wants something big. I told him a 2v 5.4 Expedition is his best bet, but he is a die hard Moparian. I'm wondering if the guy ran a Cold air intake and got water or moisture up there somewhere, these engines don't like anything wet.

You ever get to fix any DCT transmissions, clutches, DPS6? Those are the norm these days. Them are chitoles.

Nope. I'm at a GM dealer.
Only dual clutch we have isn't even here yet, in the new Vette.
Our newest trans issue is the 6L80 grenading torque converters.
Last year it was the 6T transmissions breaking 3-5-R wave plates.

Good cheap SUV?? Why not find an XJ they can be had for a few hundred bucks and parts are plentiful. 4.0 and Aisin transmission are pretty hard to beat. 300,000 miles is the norm and will easily go beyond that if well cared for. We've had a ton of Jeep's and all of them have been good to us.

I'm a Mopar guy but with a new baby and a tight budget, *f-wordin around with a 5.7 that could be a money pit and gets 10-12 mpg doesn't sound very smart.
