All mechanics on the flightline get a pair of steel toe boots or shoes every year compliments of Uncle Sugar. Mechanics get a chit, last year was $130 to each, anything over you pay the difference. Many brands to choose from and Timberlands do suck.

I’ve got six or seven brand new pairs of steel toe boots in their original boxes...Georgia Boot, Carhart, etc, etc 12D and 12E in my bedroom closet now that have never even seen the hangar concrete floors. Should probably gift a pair or two this holiday season in the holiday thread or put ‘em up in any future raffles.
I'll buy a couple pair of Georgia's or whatever if you want to sell some.
Herman survivors, wolverine, rocky all went to *s-word
I used to get year's from a pair now month's.

For many years they had boot trucks come to the different squadrons on the flightline and you just went out and got in line with whoever’s truck had your preference of boots.

Now, they give you the little paperwork/chit and half a day paid time off...go out in town to any one of three/four boot places the gubment does business with, and pick out any brand ya want. Several makes and many decent pairs of boots fall in the $130 chit range. I usually have to add a little coin to the purchase for all mine. Most I get run $150-$170 so I gotta fork out $20-40 bucks or so, make up the difference.

They have a boot truck show up once a week at each plant in Pittsburgh. We have to get a slip and they issue it as needed. Sometimes boots lasted two years and other times six months. I never been turned down for a slip. The selection has changed over the last couple years. We used to be able to get Red Wing, Michelin, Carolina, Timberland, Wolverine and a couple others. Now Hytest and some cheap brands have been added. Carolina and Timberland are still there. Last pair I got were some Hytest and they are very comfortable and light. Bet they dont last 6 months though! Carolina have been my favorites!

You know Sorel used to make some damn good 12, 14, 16" insulated, waterproof boots back in the 70's/80's as well. I'm sure they're still doing their thing, just don't hear much about them anymore. I have no clue as to whether the quality of them/otherwise went in the *s-wordter like so many others nowadays, that were damn good boots back in those days.

Mostly because there weren't many popular manufacturers of waterproof winter boots back then I think. With the invention of Gore Tex, heavier rubber kinda fell by the wayside

I had a pair of Sorel pack boots back.in the 80's. My feet were never wet or cold...ever!
Don't quote me on this series/type of Sorels, it's been so damn long...but I think they were the Kamik 5 series back in the late 70's/early 80's that I had...both pairs were a two-tone green/dark green. They were the cat's meow back then...no cold nor no wet feet.
