The problem with using iron balls is the wear it causes on the soft metal in the gear box.
Plastic won't cause much wear, although they will have to be replaced a little more often. And there are some plastic materials that can withstand a lot too.

At the ol print shopwe'd use PEEK Plastic covered rollers for high temp / pressure. A 40" x 8" od 6"id tube was only 11000 doll hairs

The 8 and 10 speed are plastic.
I'm not sure if they are the same size as all the other metal ones or not.
It wouldn't shock me if it was simply cost cutting.

They are a lot more to rent here in the uk per day. But depends on how long you need them, ie.. around 300 pounds per day but a weeks hire soon drops significantly.

But I agree it makes the job far less painful at the end of the day

Edit : I should add… the longer the reach the bigger the hire cost by a long way for the extra feet/meterage you get. But I can understand why etc.

Evening men. I had a buddy braze one of my mower spindles and save me from an epic fûck up. Let’s just say sometimes having 20 tons of pressure at your fingertips isn’t a good thing. Got em all rebuilt tonight. A quick coat of paint tomorrow and I’ll put the deck back together. I expect we’ll be mowing in the next week or two.
