I had a customer drop off a saw, while filling out his work order, I asked his last name, he spelled it out, "k..i..s..s" and I replied, "oh, Keesh" and his eyes got real big and he said..."yeah, how did you know that??" Its a very common Hungarian last name and it helps that I lived there for 2.5 years.

It is absolutely wild that this has come up, but I’ve been working with a Knutson here in Nashville for the past couple of months who is from Michigan. I had never heard the name in my life until I met him and now it comes up on the Chainsaw forum.

That tracks for both where I am and Wayne is 4 hours South of me. Gimli, MB (also home of Crown Royal) is the largest Icelandic population outside of Iceland, with an annual celebration (Islendingdagurinn) that draws people from all over.

In the old days, back in the 1800s, it was quite normal for children to be given a family name after their father's first name, perhaps especially on smaller farms where people were very poor.
When I read the censuses in this valley, in 1700 and 1800, Knut's sons would be called Knutson, while Kristen's sons would be called Kristenson.

It was quite normal for many from Iceland and Norway to travel across the pond to earn money, many also settled there for good.
