They won't touch it here. The called an injection trauma specialist in Knoxville, and are hauling my old ass there in an ambulance. They say that grease will ruin the tissue in my finger in a matter of hours. Not 100% sure I wont lose the damn thing.
Not good Randy praying for a Positive outcome for you buddy

Well I started with a new machinist. He was finishing trimming a mandrel when I got there tonght. 54mm to fit 1122 jugs.

Question
Are these newer chainsaw cylinders high silicon castings?

He is talking about switching to diamond cutters because they don't trim so smooth on the newer ones. We tossed on an 066 and it was a bit better. Cut some passes with different angles and heights on the tooling. Tried several different cutting tools like carbide and HHS I think he ground one out of. Anyway... even the radius cutter he ground for the base radius seemed a bit rough.

Any tips or tricks he could try?
He worries too much about keeping everything tight and true. He does precision work most times and I told him, repeatedly, this ain't that. No worries on jug and base cut. Two were true to the bore 066 was out three or four.

I know when I hand him a new jug It won't fit. Stock A jug honed just fits. Another cleaned up jug dropped right on. He like things tight. Running the tail stock up real tight and tried 400 and 600 rpms. I'm good with the finish. He is not. The stuff has ridges in the face no matter what we tried even fresh cutters. Other stock like the mandrel looks like a mirror. Flakey chip imo.
Have not set up for a band cut, yet. Might just do this batch by hand. 394's are next then my 084's.

Edit for spelling and missing words. Might need more yet. Drinky time

Good news just keeps coming my way almost everyday now. The universe likes me :beer-toast1:

Drinking and WandaVision with the girls :)

So I get a text just a bit ago from Lucas

Tightened the jibs on the slide and sharpened the tool, pretty good surface finish now.

I said, I need to test fit the second one we started trimming on. Have one here uncut, one cut by someone else on the base and the one we took 0.015 off of the base. Cutting more jugs tonight or you done?

He had to run earlier and do something for his girl at 8pm.

Text back
Let's talk tomorrow, I just wanted to see if I could get it better. That *s-word was driving me nuts, glad it's doable.

We were on one of the lathes he just got set back up from a bunch of work on it. Some scrapping, things all fixed up on it, cleaned and still needs one plastic gear for the feed drive, one or two ways redone ground on the surface grinder that was just refinished and new everything in the motor. Allen set screw large hand crank on the main drive, cool. Very nice tool that surface grinder with so many diamond cutters and stones he has new for it. I'm just loving this deal. So much easier than mailing stuff or waiting on my other machinist for weeks or months.
