I've told both of the kids the first two years of college is on me. I've worked my tail off for all of their lives and they've seen it and both have a pretty damn good work ethic. My daughter has chosen remote learning for the rest of this year so she can work as much as possible and still carries honor roll grades. She gets a pretty long leash from me. My son, whom a few of you have met, also did well in school but not so much at CC. After a second partial semester of failure we agreed it wasn't working and he did what he really wanted to do and entered the full time work force. After a couple of different ideas he's settled into a millwright apprenticeship where he can work as much as he desires. And he is. I'm almost certain my daughter will wind up with at least a bachelor's degree, but not because I'm making her. She's just driven. A hard worker. They both are.

There is no one right path for them. You show them how to work and support them the best you can. I tell my GF after middle school I want to be the bumpers in the gutters at the bowling alley.

YMMV.
Mine are still in elementary school so no worry about college just yet. College wasn’t for me but did a few things before DTE called. I went to school for that and have worked my ass off since i’ve been 14. My wife has gone to school 3 different times. First she her got her Bachelors to be an RN, then decided she wanted to be a nurse practitioner (CNP) so she got her Masters in nursing, she then decided she wanted to go to the top of the pay scale so she went back to be a Certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA) and advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) and this is what she does now. She has spent as much time in a classroom as she has a hospital. So far our kids seem to be following along. We do very well financially but have earned it.

I'm sure there are folks that will say I do too much. Personally I'd love to do more. I just want good outcomes for them and for them to not need me forever.

I very much doubt you're doing too much Tim. All of my grandparents told us grandkids that they wanted to work harder and make sacrifices so their kids and grandkids could have a better life. My dad and his brothers
felt the same way. So far, all us kids/grandkids are doing well, with only two exceptions (cousins of mine).

Kids see that example and it almost always makes a lasting impression.

As long as my son keeps with the straight A’s I’m not gonna make him do manual labor like me. I hope he becomes a scientist or something.

Everyone benefits from a little manual labour. They only way to learn what is best for us is to do some things that we don’t like. Need to know what we fall back on if we slack and fail and the learning stuff. A lot of motivation can be gained on the stupid end of a shovel.

There is lots to be said for all the summer weeks we spent on the uncles farm as kids.

Nice, what model? My every day carry is a Buck 303c. Daughter got it for me at Army-Navy surplus over 20 years ago.

I’m not even sure, will try and remember to see what the box says when I get home.

Always worked around the farm and helped the neighbors growing up.
One of the things that stuck in my mind is something me ole pappy said when I was about to turn 16.
I said "dad, I'm gonna need a car soon".
He looked at me and said "then you'll be needing a JOB sooner".
He always helped me, but he made sure I knew there was no free ride.
He did more for my younger brother, and it seemed like he lacked some of the motivation I had.
Maybe just the difference in people...

I agree with ya. My old lady thinks her kids need first cars bought for them when they become of age. My first vehicle was a $300 87 s-10 that looked like Swiss cheese. Kids these days are getting brand new vehicles that mommy and daddy pay for and all they do is destroy them
