Thumbs up on the muffler mod. As already mentioned, they really wake up nicely. You'll be glad you bought the needle files when you get into advancing the timing. Those things are great for filing the edge of the key inside the flywheel.
You'll probably want to order a flywheel removal tool if you don't have one. They're under 10 bucks.

I don't remember if my tool worked on my 029 (converted to a 390). Anyway, after you loosen the nut, put it back on, but not snug to the flywheel. Then lift the saw by the handle and give the nut a rap with the hammer (not too hard, but some need more persuasion than others). The flywheel will pop loose.

On the integrated key flywheel, file the left side of the key about 20/1000, then make sure when you re install it that side is against the crank channel.

I left my cylinder stock, but did the muff mod and timing advance. Seemed to run fairly well (the guy that has it now is very happy with it).

The flywheel nut on these saws have a flange on them. To remove the flywheel, do what Jim said above as far as loosening the nut, then I leave a 1/2" deep well socket on the nut (it's 13mm but 1/2" fits it tighter, either will work) I then lift the saw about an inch above the bench with a duck bill pliers firmly grasping a flywheel fin and give the socket a medium rap with a 14 oz brass hammer. Works every time.

I just held the saw by the handle, but I did put a 6 pt socket on the nut. Good advice, I forgot about that!

Here is my rough ass muffler mod. Would have used my electric die grinder but the neck broke off of it lol so I drilled it out and filed as good as I could with the *s-wordty bastard file I have

If it runs good as is does will it still make more power with the timing change? The way it is it runs amazing. But I've ran my dad's woods ported 576xp and I kinda got used to that extra power.

It will give it more pep for sure. The muffler mod looks good.

The more I use this thing to cut big oaks the more I want a larger saw. Every time I get firewood I end up with 30 inch plus trees lol

I ended up cutting a tree with a 54" diameter the other day. Luckily we had the 576xp. Same size bar as mine but it's just a whole lot faster to deal with

Time for a 461!

All of the saws are timed a bit differently, if your is running strong, you may want to leave it as is. Just cause an advance helps one does not mean it will help the next.

I did a less aggressive muff mod.

It runs very strong as long as the chain is sharp I can get through a 24 inch oak in 30 seconds or so letting the saw pull through. If I start trying to press it its pretty easy to bog. I've had plans to buy a 390xp every since dad got rid of his woods ported 390xp. He traded it for the 576xp that's also ported by the same builder and got $700 on top of it. He traded for the extra pound less lol i think I'd rather have power before caring about weight. I'm not a logger but when I do cut I have very little time and need to get *s-word done.

I'd take .010-.015 off the key at first and see what you think. I advanced a ms250
.020 once and it didn't like it.

I almost just want to leave it alone if I'm not going to do any port work on it. It runs good and I guess the cylinder I bought will sit on a shelf for a future project

If I had to guess when I get the bigger saw finding porting info will be much easier. I'm sure not many port a homeowner saw like this ms310

I've been wanting to start collecting several saws anyways. I have 3 other saws but they're... Uhm... Questionable lol
