Hey Big Red can you ohm out the bad coil at the high power lead and the square connector on the coil?
Hey Lone Wolf, checked the coil today and it is reading 6.26 ohms. Took a pick just to make sure I checked what you were looking for.

It looks like the blue coil if so it should read 8.7 brown coil reads 12.9 That connector isnt bent and grounding out on the metal mount part is it?

Nope, just looks like it in the picture. When you speak of the brown or blue coil I am guessing you are talking about the plastic stuff covering the internals? So I can now check the other coils I have based on the info you gave me. Is this info available in the manuals? I would love to start checking the coils prior to assembly on all the saws I build.

Not sure if this method is 100 percent but it seems when they are bad the numbers change. Go check the others and they should be what I posted depending on color . The ohms can vary a few tenths or so.

I tested a brown one today and it showed 12.47 ohms. Because it's not 12.9 does that mean it's on the way out or is that close enough to mean it's good?

It may be within factory tolerances, but that doesn't mean it is a good coil. I had one bike coil that was low, but within tolerances, however it was hard starting. I had the coil re-wired with an extra 20% of wire and never had a starting problem again.

The fact it is low may indicate that some of the insulation is breaking down inside and it is shorting between windings.

If it still runs and starts fine, I wouldn't worry about it. However, if you begin to have problems, check the resistance again. If it has dropped some more you may have found the problem.
