I have just recently began learning how to port my own saws and am thoroughly pleased with the results thus far! My 372 has seen the most extensive changes and although still relatively mild compared to what the veteran porters do, it's like it's becoming a totally different saw! I plan to go in one more time for a final bit of changes to exhaust and transfer and I think it will be done.

Next on the bench for porting is my muff modded, base gasket deleted 357. I did match the lower transfers, but I plan to go in and make some alterations to port timing now as well.

I agree with jmssaws on that, hard to be happy with stock once you start modding. :)

I haven't ran a ported saw I didn't like buy I've ran lots of stock saws I didn't like.
I know this does'nt gel with the ported saw fan club but I have a ported ms660, strato gutted ported ms261 standard carb, ms201rear handle timing advance/mm, and ms150 with same mods. My favourite saws to run are my stock 681 Solo and stock 550xp and stock ms200t...is there something wrong with me or do I just pick good stock saws?o_O:confused:

Ya but you must first find someone who can improve on them and keep their design integrity, thats the hard part. My ported ms261 holds 12+k in the cut but lacks midrange torque, in aussie hardwood torque is important. It also goes through fuel near twice as fast as my stock one. Feathering a saw through wood in 30-40° heat with 5 layers of kevlar wrapped around you and a helmet with muffs and gloves on is not so fun for work. Having to stop and fill up every 8-10mins is PITA too. Then turn the saw on its side and have exhaust blasted into you face from a louver muff modd makes you want to toss the thing off a cliff. Different story cutting cookies standing up with a log being held in a nice position. Its a balancing act of compromise for sure. My MM660 is well balanced in that regard, its just like a better faster stock saw, but my 681 is lighter with better AV and cuts faster. Look I love ported/modded two strokes but work is work and play is play.

When a simple mod can really wake em up say filter and exhaust then fuel isn't always consumed as fast. but it is nice to speed through a cut for felling limbing bucking. I don't want to make 3 cuts while a Co worker has 3/4 of the tree diced up. So speed Of a saw is important to me, Especially in tree

OK, so I went into my XPW for the final time today and made some changes...

Randy, you were right, I misread my degree wheel and the exhaust was NOT 113, but 103.
Before I made the first changes the stock cylinder port timing with a base gasket delete was Ex:103, Trans:128 and Intake:75

Last time I was inside, I raised the transfers 3 deg so the numbers it was at when I started today and with the base gasket delete: Ex:103, Trans:125, Int:75, BD of 22.

I raised the exhaust to 100, transfers to 122 and also squared the intake. I opted not to lower the intake floor as I want to be careful not to lose too much intake velocity. Last time I was in I widened the exhaust to 35mm to bring it to 70% of bore diameter. I did not make any changes to exhaust width today, just raised it 3.

We don't have any logs in our little landing at this time so all I did was fire it up and make sure it would at lease run and spool up, which it did in spades. :)

Final timing numbers are: Ex:100, Trans:122, Intake:75 and 22 deg of blowdown. These numbers reflect a deleted base gasket

Total mods to be included with the above numbers:
-Unlimited coil
-Exhaust widened to 70% of bore
-Intake port squared up
-Base gasket delete
-Advanced ignition timing
-Dual ported muffler

Couple pics of what I did...
First is a shot of the exhaust port, second is of the exhaust outlet which I enlarged and also enlarged the gasket, heat shield and muffler.

Third shot is of the squared up intake.

Last pic just a general shot of final cleanup of lower transfers.

I love my ported saws, and would not have some if they were not ported, but my 044#1 is not ported but runs very nicely. Has the dp muff, HD-2, timing advance and gasket delete.

It is a very nice running saw with a 20" bar. I plan to have it at the Upstate NY GTG if anyone wants to run it for themselves.

All saws can benefit from porting, but some need it more than others, and there is something about having a good running unported saw that I also like.

Very true... I recently did a complete overhaul on an OE 346 at work, crank bearings, seals, new OEM P&C, carb, the whole bit. All I did to mod it was delete the base gasket... It wears an 18" bar running .325 round ground chisel. This is my go-to saw up in the bucket truck at work and it is a very strong runner!

I'll take you up on that offer:). I didn't get to do much cutting with my 044 before it got the hybrid treatment. I'll have a nice ms260 there you can run if you'd like.

That would be nice, and bring that hybrid also.
I plan on it. Hopefully I'll have my 066 there too. :coleman:
I'm actually hoping to get a couple people to run each of my saws and give me some feed back on them. Good, bad, and constructive criticism will be welcomed. I'm really looking forward to the gtg
