She cuts but seems like maybe an air leak. Got enough parts for two saws and some spare parts now I think with this 61 I got. Got another top, now looking for another.

Did a brake cleaner leak test last night ala @afleetcommand and found carb to cyl bolts loose, nice that it was an easy fix. Is it a "thing" for them to back out? Blue loctite perhaps?

Wish I could test it in wood some more, but it's supposed to rain and everything will be a sticky mess for a few days. Adobe mud is horrible. Nice thing is maybe all that dry hard dusty wood I have may not be so dusty, as well as the dustbowl of a yard we have.

They "settle" over time...the materials crush with time is all. So I guess they don't often back out but I have had to "snug" them on saws a time or two, usually high hour saws.

So 266 #2 that I got more recently and more complete is a runner (still needs more testing) minus the fullwrap bracket being off to be duplicated.

Discovered the top cover I got to make a second saw is apparently off a later saw or 272 or something, doesn’t fit. I could drill and tap but the plug hits too. Also don’t care for the chunkier look.

The other day I pulled #1 (the one that started this thread) mostly apart. Seals had failed and it had some transfer, as well as the case rot issue. Can weld up the major hole, but it’s still gonna be rough and gnarly unless I fill, sand, repaint, etc. (update, have another set of cases now)

Tonight I pulled the 61 donor apart. Was filthy, but now pretty clean...outside anyway. I think the PnC will clean up.

The crankcase is nasty inside, water and ethanol. Looks like I will be splitting the case.

Can one get rivets today move the 266 tag to the 61?

Got some goodies from @Whitty21

starting to mess with figuring out which cases and top covers interchange or don’t, and which can be drilled and tapped or not.

Pretty stoked about this saw. Wanted a saw to go between my 2050 and 395 and got my 2159 which didn’t work out so well, think this might fit the bill. Found the 266 in a junk pile while looking for an AV spring for the 2050. $40 and it ran. I’ll be back with more pics and info as I have time. I have several saw and vehicle projects in the works. @Spike60 here’s the project I was telling you about.
266s are legit. I cut decent wood with one

I recently cleaned a bunch of these parts.
Assembled the 61 cases in preparation for the 266 cyl from my original crusty 266 and a new meteor piston, improved open skirt design. Pretty easy...Hair dryer and tap tap here and there with bronze to disassemble and reassemble cases. Also gonna get a squish bump. Wanna see how it runs compared to my stock 266 - the one I got second that was complete, carb kit and sticky throttle. 61 will get a black top I got from @Johnmn-thanks!

Then the “different” 272 build...which will be kept under wraps until it’s done :D I’m kinda excited about that one.

I realized I goofed the assembly of the 61/266. Went in and saw a dowel pin on the bench...two halves of the cases are off about .015”, doh! I was too worrried about bearings and crank. And of course I sealed the gasket “for good measure” *eyeroll* gonna be fun to get it apart and reset. @Mattyo have a chuckle at my expense.

Then today I was out looking at a job at 3:30. Dark Clouds blew in and temp dropped to 92, so I went home and got 266 #2, mr. sticky throttle and took it to the shop to test...it has apparently developed a big fat crank seal air leak since the last time I ran it, ha! Fine, full build it is!

The other day I started to pull this saw apart. I noticed the clutch was rubbing on the inside of the cover. Tonight I got back to it and was going to try the brake cleaner spray test. When I went to start it, the starter slipped. Never has before. The little metal hub in the starter that catches the dogs on the flywheel is a little too far out…or the flywheel is a little deep in the case. Made me wonder if the bearings went and the crank shifted…the seals were dried up. Flywheel side looks like the seal was Melting or degrading and getting sucked in. The crank and bearings turn and sound ok. Don’t wanna split cases if I don’t have to but maybe I should. Hmm. I put seals in it tonight. Still ran wonky. Spray while running leak test. Turns out a gasket was leaking impulse between the intake block and carb. Seems good now.

The starter slip turned out to be the starter being too shallow (what’s up with that?) so I put the 61 starter on it…and the 61 top cover…and the full wrap cuz I don’t like the small diameter half wraps…and a 24” bar. Miiiight get up early and put it in wood tomorrow. 99C089B1-610E-4F73-8851-5C5F32A4EFBD.jpegF16675FE-97F0-4FD9-BA8E-9AFC7F6578A2.jpeg

So the 266 I got complete made a few cuts without issue finally.

I got the 61 converted to 266 with meteor piston, BGD, and the cylinder from the first crusty partial 266 I bought that started this thread. 7B0A30E6-C855-464E-87CF-B9EE28B2AF3E.jpeg

When I put the 61/266 together, I ran into a melted intake block, rabbit trail thread :

https://opeforum.com/threads/husky-intake-block-repair-attempt.24945/#post-1287351

also, the hyway gasket sets are full of hooey as to their applications…so I made my own intake gaskets and borrowed the carb and intake from the 266 as well as the 61 starter because the 266 starter pulley was too short. I trimmed a starter pulley from a later 272 down at work today, may get the 266 back together tonight. My bar plates and some gaskets and seals showed up Today. One last saw on this chassis to build, the 272. Need a 272 intake block.
