I have remnants of a very early 10mm saw in my 1128 junk box. Quite literally, everything is slightly thinner, lighter, etc. The recoil is thinner casting and is held on with 4mm fasteners. Crankcase is thinner material and the jug bolts are 5mm. Top cover bolts are 4mm and exhaust bolts are 5mm vs 6mm on the newer 044/440. The muffler casing is as thin as a husky muffler. The crank shaft is thinner on the weights and the rod is pretty spindly. The HD filter cover has no wings on the original covers and as mentioned the tanks have less molded braces and are a thinner plastic. The differences are on par with most of the models from that era compared with the later versions. An early 064 is very noticeably lighter than a late model one. An 034 is lighter than a later plastic tag 034 for all the same reasons. Most/all parts interchange but few are actually identical. The earliest models are the lightest and I'm guessing as they discovered weak areas they updated them and consequently gained some weight.
Good post!
Alot of this 30 year old period info has been forgotten.
This is my 1989 10mm 044AV and first year 1986 064AV.
When I worked for Stihl In 1989 I passed out this 044 brochure on to all the dealers and end-users I could find.
The brochure says the 044 was 12.8 lbs which I believe was true as that was a 1988 brochure spec when the earliest 044 was introduced.
My 064 owner's manual says 14.1 lbs.

I had seen 13 lbs published for the 044, and still thought that was optimistic! The lightest I have seen on a scale is about 13+1/3 lbs.

Are they lighter with that arctic filter set up???

I have both a 10 mm 044 and a MS440, and they are not as light as my 362 C (Ver I) that everyone complained was too heavy (actual wt 13 lbs, the same as a 562 or 262). But my 044 has the regular filter (now an HD-2).

Mike, my 044AV came with a aluminum smooth bumper.
Yep just a lightweight bare bones nylon filter.
I field tested the first Artic 044 in the winter of 1991-92. It wasn't heated handles. It had a heat tube coming off the muffler to the carb. The electronic heated carb which I didn't test won the test.

My old first year 064 weighed 14.6 lbs. That was with a half wrap, dual dogs, and dry powerhead only. It weighed exactly what my ms 460 and 7900 weighed.
I believe the Stihl weight specs at the time didn't include the dogs, as there was an optional aluminum smooth bumper plate.
I had the a very early 064 in 1986 as it's manual claims 14.1 lbs. But they fattened up quick after their 1st introduction.

Thanks, that explains a lot!

Wow! What filter was on it?
Mine had the old filter with the metal cover which was very light. The filter wasn't nearly as good as the later ones, but the saw was sure light. I would guess the cases and or flywheel may have been lighter and not as strong, but that is only a guess.

The first Australian retail purchased 462. We'll sort of. It's Australia bound at least. [emoji13]
