Well everyone is mistakingly comparing the 500i to the 461/462. These saws are not in the same category. Do you compare a Chevy 350 to 305, NO!

Could have scored a 661 for 1059 when they came out but skipped it. No use for one really. Have plenty of big saws here for my needs... mostly milling with those.

500I is sweet but no real use for it here.

462 is my new plan. I can go up with that if needed and my hands will thank me every time I pick it up in my game here.

MS500i - $700 = MS461. You have to wonder... I could buy a really nice chainsaw for $700. That would give me a pair of good saws for the price of one 500i. Am I missing something?

An MS461R & an MS261CM for the price of a MS500I?

Pssssshhhhhh.

The 500i pulls a 36 more like a 390 husky does the 661 doesn’t pull a 36 like a 395 does.

Not many things pull any length bar like a 395 does. Those things are magic for big wood.

Whether you agree or not the 461 is in that category.

And it does well against those.

Yeah... The MS 461 is definitely more in that 7900 Dolmar/046, MS 460 & 461 and now 500i class than the MS 462. They cut pretty good and have a nice, forgiving power band. Now that I have some time on a 500i doing storm cleanup I think it’s best suited to a 28” bar and probably a 32 with a wicked chain... Which is what I put on an MS 461.

When I worked out west, yada yada, Mt. Hood area, yada, I’d put a good square chain on a three foot bar on my 046 and it handled it pretty well. The running characteristics of the MS 461 lend itself better for longer bars, and three footers aren’t rare on the wet coast on that size saw.

The quads broaden the power band?
Never ran a 461.

Not around here, Close though. I haven’t seen a 461r locally but the regular is $1039 with a 25 and the 261cm is right around $600 with a 16. The only 500 I’ve seen had a 36 es light and they wanted $1350.
