I had just got my 500 Monday. I haven't seen the 462 yet in person but they did have a 461 on the shelf which I'm like 90% sure was a "new" addition to the shop. Maybe they are just finishing out their part stock of the 461?

MS500i - $700 = MS461. You have to wonder... I could buy a really nice chainsaw for $700. That would give me a pair of good saws for the price of one 500i. Am I missing something?

The 461 was what was comparing to the 500. The 500 was slimmer in appearance and feel compared to the 461. I'm still hanging back before I give a definite opinion on it. But if it holds together I think I'm going to enjoy it, it's got a great amount of power for a saw that weighs less than a 372xp. It was hungry pulling a 36" bar in my firewood pile. Starting this Thursday I'll be putting it to work to get a better idea.

Like I said I haven’t seen a 500 but they’re not $700 more. $1350 for a 500 or $1059 for a 461. If the 461 was significantly cheaper I’d consider it.

The way to tell if it is a parts saw is the case will not have a serial number

I didn't mean the dealer I meant the stihl factory. As in maybe they never hit their original production quota before the 462 came out.

My error. I didn't realize the 461 was that expensive these days. I must have been thinking about the MS460. Also, I thought the 500i was higher than that. A local logger said he dropped $1500 on his 500i before he got out of the store. Does he own an MS661? Yes, three, and all are m-tronic and still run well.

The MS441c-m is now listed at over $1,000. I have to wonder if Deere might be benefiting from Stihl marketing. Deere stock has doubled in a year and tripled in three.

I paid around 1,400 with taxes included on mine. I wanted a R but there was no ship date so I bit the bullet.

Where you think your getting a new ms461 for 700$? 1050$ for new 461 that they do still make, 1150 for an ms462 and about 1300 for a 500i

Please see post #12. I already apologized. Around here there is no less than a 2-month wait for a 500i. There are that many of them back ordered. Dealers cannot even promise a delivery date.

I’ve been told by a few people that we’ll see the MS 461 for a while yet, I don’t know why-possibly the concrete/ductile iron saw. Either way, it’s a plus, it’s Stihl’s best all-rounder yet.

Agreed. That is why I still own an 046 Mag and it explains why the guy who borrowed that saw from me two years ago never returned it to the owner --> me.
