Even if you have surface plate it would be hard to keep even pressure. I guess it’s possible

There used to be a dickbag around here that sanded jug bases for customers saws. It was not uncommon for him to be .020-.030 out.

I remembered that post. I think I recommended using a razor knife and feeler gauge to mark the base as opposed to a sharpie though.

I use the sharp edge on the micrometer on each side before I place it on the belt sander

That being said I am looking for a lathe to cut down 372 jugs.

I’ve marked the base all around and used a belt sander to take the base down.

The casting can be way off

It works flawless but you have to take your time and take a little at a time off

Flawless: I’ve had a bunch of flawless cylinders on my lathe ......... cleaning up the flawlessness

I use the sharp edge on the micrometer on each side before I place it on the belt sander

Definitely not an accurate way to do things, but hey ........... good enough for who it’s for !!!

It was all an experiment, I’ve been using the ms 360 for a year no issues yet. The ms 440 not enough time on it to gather any data. Final sqwish was .018. The ms 440 does have a bit more vibration than I like. But I’ll run it some more see if it gets better after breaking in or I’ll tear it back Down and tinker some more.

The problem with a belt sander might be the cylinder and base relationship .In theory the base and cylinder should be machined 90 degrees one to another .You can't just measure one flange of a cylinder and assume the other three are perfectly in line .It's started out a rough casting from a die cast machine and it will not be perfect in every way .
By using a lathe with some type of arbor in the cylinder you can assume it will more in alignment cylinder bore to base .Even on a lathe you will get more accurate results if you only use one flange to take your measurements . In my case once my cylinder didn't come out so good.So it was hunting for something a little thicker than a standard 20 thou thick Stihl base gasket Besides all that a belt sander on aluminum will really load up the sanding belt .

Your absolutely right Al. All of my experiments have been based on the cutter being referenced 90* to the bore. I pick one corner and use that measurement to monitor material removal.

If anyone were to ever use a belt sander, they would need to devise a jig for the cylinder to remain absolutely flat. I dont condone it, the lathe is a wonderful invention.

--Little known fact .The engine lathe is only machine that can duplicate itself .You would be surprised the unconventional things they can do simply because other specialty tools have been made to do them easier and faster .I only know a very little of what they can do .However in high school I must have duplicated 50 early Ford and Chevy keys with a milling attachment using beer can openers .This was decades before "pop tops " and twist caps .
