Jimmy: With the intake block, it is my understanding that over time they can become fatigued from heat and very minute cracks can develop. The 394 that I rebuilt for the tree service was giving me fits as I tried to dial in the jetting. I replaced that intake block and it cured the tuning issues. But then again, we are talking about parts that are near 20 years old, some older. The same type of thing does happen to a rubber intake boot as well. I guess it's really tomato/tomaahhto. Good thing is that the intake blocks are still available.. Thanks for your insight, I appreciate feedback and advice from those with experience with a particular model.

Wolverine: I see that you trim the 395 filter cover, looks easy enough.. Is this to allow fitment on a 394 cylinder cover?? If so that's cool because I won't have to get a new cylinder cover, just the filter cover and filter mount... For some reason I was thinking I would have to get a cylinder cover as well.....
Oh I understand but I am just pointing out I wouldn't ditch a 394 just because. If I happened to loose a jug and my spare I wouldn't fret converting to 395 setup but I am not running out to do it right now.

Wolverine to the rescue with hard to find 394 parts yet again!!! I thank you Sir. :)

Jimmy contacted me yesterday and said he may have one for me but he needs to go through his parts bin to make sure. I will put the part you linked in my watch list in case Jimmy doesn't have one.

Thanks again! :)

Took me a while to find mine.
I was scouring for a coil, think mine is getting unhappy from milling so much.

Well, I succumbed to curiosity and regardless of my plans to leave the big '94 alone till I finish the 359 project, I pulled the muffler and took a peek up the skirt of the old girl... Found that the piston is moderately scored, much less so than the pistons in other saws I have overhauled recently. I'm hoping that this is a good sign that the cylinder survived relatively unscathed!

I am eyeballing the Meteor piston for the 394 as it seems to be the single best alternative to the discontinued OEM piston. I have noticed that Meteor's part number is different between the 394 and 395. Not sure what the difference is though...

Once the 359 is done, I'll continue this thread as the 394 rebuild/mod progresses.

I am going to need a few more odds and ends type parts for the '94 like the outer bucking dog, high top filter cover, throttle lock-out and it's spring, clutch cover (preferably with functional chainbrake). So if anyone has any of these parts kicking around as spares, I will be looking to buy once my focus shifts to the 394, I'll let you guys know here when I'm ready. I realize I can source these parts elsewhere, but I figure I would rather do business with my fellow forum enthusiasts first if I can... Beyond that it's just going to be the rebuild parts.

Can't wait!! :D

I thought you could use a 395 piston in a 394? Jason Stratton will know

Aaaaaaand...... I just ordered one of the few 394 part numbered Meteor pistons. There doesn't seem to be as many of those kicking around so I pulled the trigger....

Do I recall it being said somewhere that the ring locator pin location is different between the 394 and 395 spec pistons or am I mistaken?

I pretty sure you can, but I could swear I have seen it said that the ring locator pin locations are different between the two...

Matter of fact, I was browsing around on HL Supply at stuff and compared the 394 and 395 Meteors there and that's where I noted the different part numbers.

Either case, I have one on the way now...

I have the 395 meteor in mine. As I was told, it's just the ring locating pin placement as you mentioned that's different.
