So yesterday a coworker gave me another saw that I suspect needs a thorough overhaul. It belongs to another worker for the tree service I have fixed a couple of saws for recently..
It's a low top 394 and I was told it "needs alot"....
So my friend/coworker knowing that I have been itching for a 394/5 builder of my own texted this other fella and asked if he would sell the powerhead to me.. He stated that he would prefer to fix it if it can be fixed for $400 or under but would sell it for $150 if I wanted it.. Of course my response was yes, I absolutely want it for $150, but that I am more than willing to fix it up if that's what he wanted. His reply to that was "sold!"
So, the coworker of mine who brokered this deal has been telling me that the tree service intends to pay me for the 2 saws I rebuilt for them, a 394 and a 575. I have held the position that I am OK with things the way they sit, and I do not require payment because I admire this local business man for the quality of his work and the fact that he started very small and has been successful, and of course working on his saws has helped me expand my knowledge and experience with saws... So that is a win in my book..
So back to closing the deal, I told my friend that whatever money was coming my way could go to the owner of this 394 powerhead and if it was short of the $150 asking price I would make up the difference. I was then told that the intent was to pay me $200 so I said give it all to him and tell him I said thanks for the good deal! I see bare 394 bottom ends with just clutch, flywheel, ignition, and crank that go for $150 and that I considered even $200 was a very good deal for a complete powerhead in need of an overhaul.
Sorry about the long story, I'm just excited as heck that I finally have a big cube saw to build up, and I don't even have to scavenge up a pile of missing parts! I guess the saw gods decided to smile on me as this deal worked out so perfectly it's like it was meant to be... I think the old girl will clean up right well.. I say old girl because the ID plate doesn't have the year of manufacture like they started doing in what, '97?
So my plan is a full overhaul, crank bearings, seals, P&C kit. Unless I find the cylinder to be in exceptional condition, I'll probably do the 395 top end conversion as opposed to trying to hunt up a used 394 cylinder in very good to excellent condition...
Low top is going to go bye-bye in favor of a high top setup. If I recall, I will need the filter mount, filter lid, and cylinder cover base for a high top setup... Correct??
BTW: if anybody out there prefers low top to high top and wants to trade even up, give me a shout.
Of course I'm going to port it!
