I have thought about trying to blue a bar.

I have blued a couple of bars. I use Brownells Oxpho Blue. It's very durable, I think the hardness of the steel affects how deep of a finish you can obtain.

Is that a wipe on bluing?

Yes, I have used the Birchwood Casey, 44-40 but I think this is the best cold blue going. Heating the steel helps obtain a darker finish. I have done several Axe heads and a bunch of Hammer's with it too.

Ive heard the Brownells is about the best but Ive never tried it
