Hi guys, I'd like your thoughts on a cylinder I'm cleaning up. I found a scored ms361 on CL that I'm fixing up. I used sandpaper wrapped around a dowel in a drill. I think I got the transfer off, but I'm left with one line above the exhaust port and several spots below it. When I feel them, they seem lower, like scratches, instead of raised. Should I try running it, or start looking for another cylinder? Hopefully the pictures will show what I'm talking about. Thanks in advance! As far as clues to the cause of the damage, the intake side of the piston looks pretty good. The saw came to me disassembled, so I couldn't vac test it.

That line above the exhaust port is probably a scratch. The black spots below look like they might be a little more transfer. You have to be careful when you get that close. Sometimes I use a small round diamond ball to get some of the small spots. Either way........run it.

Below the port won't hurt anything as long as you got all the transfer. Above the port, as long as it's smooth the worst that can happen is you'll lose a little compression. Try it and see. If I was in a jam, I wouldn't be above cleaning that piston up and trying it too, with new rings.

But I'm a cheap bastard

Thanks guys, that was quick! So I will make sure I haven't left any transfer below the port
and use it! Here's one more that show the spots below the port better. Thanks again.

I had a husky 55 I got of Craig's list a few years back that was scored had a scratch that was pretty deep that ran almost to the top claeaned the transfer off was gonna replace the piston but it was closed port with window piston couldnt find a aftermarket so I sanded it and polished it and put new rings on. Also deleted base gasket and opened up the ports a bit I have run about 15-20 gallons of gas through it and it's still running strong. I prob lost a little compression from the scratch as it's around 155 but the saw still runs good and 4 strokes to 16,000. I run her at 14. I'd say clean her up and run her hard.

How long would it last?

As long as any other jug. After a few tanks the dug out line would start filling with carbon. Just be sure the edges of it are smooth. Now, if it's a horizontal place out of the plating, then I worry about it catching the rings and peeling. That will run fine, but it will cost it a few psi of compression. Not something I would sell, or do for a customer, but to kill tress with.....hell yes.

Thank you sir for your reply. I will throw a piston in it and run the hell out of it and will see how long it lasts.

I agree that as long as you prep it good and clean out all grit you will see no noticeable difference in power or life outta a jug like that.
