I hear you Ryan. [emoji106]

I think in some cases guys start to go backwards trying to dig for more.

One of the most impressive ported saws I've ever ran had no machine work on the piston or the squish band, just had the base cut and some widening/shaping done on the ports and that was it.

Depends on the model/stock port timing I suppose.

I think the issue with the 261 muffler is the baffle is nearly flush with the top of the exhaust port from the cylinder, and is basically a big shelf. So it is forcing the pulse from the cylinder down as much as forwards VS up the instant it leaves the cylinder. Because of this, you have a lot of exhaust deflected off the bottom of the baffle towards the bottom of the muffler, causing a great deal of turbulence and back pressure immediately in the path of the exhaust port, with very little of the initial energy pulse forcing the exhaust out of the tiny muffler port. That also means a simple MM done after the baffle isn't making nearly as much an improvement as it would with the baffle removed as all that exhaust and pressure has to fight it's way through all the turbulence to find the other port. With the baffle removed and muffler port opened, not only can the gases flow out of the muffler immediately in all directions, hugely reducing turbulence and pressures, but any pressure pulses are immediately diffused into a much larger, lower-pressured area(AKA the atmosphere) nearly the moment the piston opens to the muffler. It's very easy to tell how stopped up the muffler is when you do this because the dB increase is rather dramatic.

I never really pursued this much on the forums before because so many people stateside told me they saw no baffle in theirs. I just assumed we were lucky in Europe to get great gains for relatively little work. And if I wanted to nearly halve the cut times, I just could throw a bit of porting on top. After all, so many euro mufflers seemed to be much more restrictive than many of the other ones I had seen; the 044 comes immediately to mind. Once you place a DP and gutted muffler on an 044, it really comes alive here. This is a pic of one on my personal 10mm saw:

I think the real question is to find to correlation between percentage faster and horsepower gained. Probably only gonna find that using a dyno. A lot of variables with timed cuts I’ve found.

Pls Show us your muff mod :)
How big do u go with it?
How much degree advance?

Hi Ferris, I largened the exhaust in the direktion to the zylinder (so the emissions have the same direction and doesn’t hit the case or the brake) and remove the baffle beside the intake in the exhaust. The timing advance is 0,3 mm (i guess) on the fixation point on the flywheel.

These pics come to us by way of @StephK87 from Germany. He was kind enough to void his warranty and send us these pics. Not only that, he will be porting this saw ASAP and gutting the stratos, Snellerized Style. I can't wait to see how this thing runs! It looks like a cross between a MS261CII and a MS661C.

Stephen's initial comments are that it's as light as a MS362, as strong as a MS461 but with better acceleration, and much better handling than a MS441.

I'm crazy excited for this thing to show up in the US but it honestly confuses me why Stihl is calling this the MS462. I would think they'd can the 441, call this a 442 and keep the 461 in the lineup as the old school lower tech saw. Seems more logical to me.
I couldn't agree more.

Hey guy's, sorry for the lack of updates...... I'm a little bit busy at the moment (and slightly ill last weekend), but i'm sitting on hot coal's to continue on the 462! On this weekend i will definitely have time ;)

However, i have an info on another hot toy :aplastao::flamethrower2:

After the leaked pic's in the last weeks, Stihl has officially anounced the new MS500i on today's press conference!

They talk about 1hp per Kilo or 1hp/2,2lbs. It looks like it doesn't has pre filtration with these air inlets and filter/carb on the tank housing.

I'm looking forward to the weekend now to bring the 462 to life again :b1:
At least it has the trademark airfilter cover nut on it.

Pollution controls unfortunately are needed. I can remember seeing and smelling rivers here in Tennessee that were so polluted that they were dark brown and devoid of life. I also remember the Tennessee Valley around Knoxville being thick with smog. Today those same rivers are beautiful, and even with many more people, the smog is gone.

Without wading into a political discussion I'll just say that without any controls, the world as we know it would be *frenched.

Finding that fine line between preserving the future for my grandkids and over regulation is something we should strive for rather than using these things as political battering rams.

Remember......this is coming from a guy that hops up engines......
I agree. Without safe surface waters ( no impairments) and clean air we'd be a 3rd world country. I've investigated many fish kills in waterbodies due to pollution discharged from industries and oil & gas activities. Most comply but some require enforcement. Also, I love my ported saws too.
